June Hatch A Long

Okay, well, on the plus side, his eyes are open, but only because I made him mad, lol. I put him back in the shell in a cup like someone said last night if this happens. I tried giving him a little sugar water & man, did that tick him off ! He opened his eyes & told me off real good :p Is there anything else I should be doing ? Do I give him the water with a dropper if he still won't take it on his own, or should leave him be ?

You only need to keep him in the shell if he came out and still hasn’t absorbed the yolk. Otherwise, he can come out and be just fine! If that’s the case I’d let him out of the cup and she’ll to dry.

How can I tell if he's absorbed it ? Sorry, I know that sounds like a dumb question, lol ! It looked still attached but pretty deflated ?

Then you did right for sure. You shouldnt see it. @CluckNDoodle will be able to tell you a little more what it should look like, I haven’t had a late absorber in person.

Can you show me a picture of what it looks like now? Outside of the egg?

It may be what's left of the membrane that is still attached to him what I usually do at that point if they are really wanting to be out and moving is to use my small scissors and tweezers. I would pinch off the place where it's attached below the belly and then snip just below that while you keep pinching with the tweezers. If you have doctors scissor clamps it may work better to clamp it off or you can use your finger for this too in a pinch.

HolyDuckBatman the question is:

Is it this
Unabsorbed Yolk.jpg

Or is it more like this
membrane and umbillical.jpg

If it's more the second picture then you want to just clamp it off and cut it's like the umbilical in a baby and then you can dip it in 50/50 betadyne/water if you have any to make sure it's cleaned off.

A picture would be the most helpful at this point. You may be seeing the egg waste and not the yolk sac.
If he's attached to the shell by a cord like LilyD mentioned then you can pinch it like her description or what I like to do is break the shell off around the part that's stuck and let them drag a really small piece of the shell rather than snip it before it's dry so there isn't any bleeding. It can then be snipped in a few hours once completely dried.

Do you mean take him out of the egg for the pic ? I just wanted to clarify before I did, in case that isn't what you meant ! I just took him out ( of the cup for a second, not the egg ) & he was trying to wiggle out & whatever it is, it's still attached to his navel for sure ! He's taken a tiny bit of sugar water & seems perked up, & opens his eyes much more now. He's been VERY vocal
