June Hatch A Long

The heat index will be 107 here today, I really feel bad for my hen. I told my husband I was thinking about bringing her in the house and he looked at me like I was crazy.
Sorry that you’re still so hot! We Cooled down but now have flash flood watches. Sigh. Did you try the frozen water bottle. Naruto still looked hot, so I replaced her water bottle despite the hatching chicks. I put the box fan on to exhaust the coop, but did not put narutos personal fan on her as I thought it could be bad for the newly hatched chicks. Hang in there!!!:fl

Wow, Naruto does look so much like Coconut! I’d never hear of an amberlink! She’s a barnyard mix, so I don’t know what breeds went into her. These were the first eggs we ever hatched and all five hens turned out to be the opposite of docile to other birds - our “mean girls”... Our friend who gave us the eggs had mostly tractor supply egg layer breeds, like production reds, black sex links, plus EEs. Naruto has been a great egg layer, when she’s not broody. She and another who looks like a red sex link are the only ones that laid an egg every single day last winter. She lays a pinkish, terra cotta large to extra large egg. Of those 12 babies that 9 Ball hatched, many were hers, from EE x Naruto. My daughter is calling them our “production birds” as she is selling the eggs as a business. Not that we have many eggs right now when 1/3 of our hens are broody! Here’s a pic of Naruto as a POL pullet.

Interesting! I wonder if she has some Amberlink mixed in there. Coconut was the ONLY hen I had that continued to lay eggs through the 2 coldest months in winter, almost daily.

Congrats on the little chicks.

I have no electricity to the coop to put a fan on her. I checked on her earlier and she was off the nest drinking and eating. I have frozen fruit for them all, and she was loving it. I'm sure she knows what she's doing. She only has a few more days left to go.

Oh and I added save a chick to everyone's water to help keep them hydrated

Sounds like a smart girl! Naruto was off a lot yesterday. I figured that at that heat and humidity, her eggs didn’t need much tending from the hen. Does your heat wave end after today or continue?

I think it should be ending today. I sure hope so.
