June Hatch-A-Long

Pics
Development on day 3 in all but one of the hedemora and one d’uccle. It’s early days so obviously not writing those off yet but yay! Development! Haha. :p had to candle these so I’d leave the duck and sebright eggs alone. xD the last week is torture!

I've just set 5 barnyard mix eggs in my Nurture Right 360. Hoping to have a few of our own chicks to match up with a chick order we placed that has a hatch date of June 15. The eggs came from 1 Turken, 1 Tolbunt Polish (bad sadly not the frizzle as she has gone broody and not laying, bad timing!), 1 silkie, 1 crested cream legbar (green egg with speckles) and 1 not sure maybe our silkie mix. The possible roosters are spitzhauben, EE, EE mix or Paint silkie. I love the surprise factor of barnyard mix eggs!

Can I play, too? I never have done a hatch-a-long that I recall. I set 25 eggs from my Blue Partridge Brahma rooster, Sebastian (Bash) over his Partridge, Blue Partridge and one Dark Brahma hens on May 16 late in the day so May 17 was Day 1. Just candled yesterday on Day 7 and removed 4 infertiles. I suspect that 3 of those belonged to my Dark Brahma hen because hers never develop for some unknown reason. She is head hen and is mated all the time.

So, as of Day 8 today, 21 little Brahmas are still humming along in my Hovabator Genesis. Haven't incubated in about 3 years because two of his hens were perpetual broodies. Brandy and Bonnie did four times each their first two years of life, three times each last year. Bash and his ladies will be 4 years old about the time these are due on June 6. No broodies yet this year, but I'm sure they're coming.

I know this is going to sound like a silly question but do we have the bantam Pekins here in the US? I have heard people from different countries mention pekins so I looked them up and it sound s like they are different from our bantam cochin. I always thought a pekin was a duck. I'm learning something new everyday. That's why I love this site.
Yes, In Australia (and maybe the UK as well?) we use Pekin instead of Cochin for the bantams. We do have LF Cochins here, though not as popular and i have read somewhere that there are bantam Cochins here which are separate, but i would say very similar looking chickens. We also have Pekin ducks here, but the chickens are probably more well known.

How did you keep others out of the nesting box?

I have 3 nesting boxes but the other ones won’t use the one that’s open 🤬

Well... I didn't. She went broody right before we left to go camping and my farm sitter (my mom) wasn't chicken knowledgeable, so I didn't want to separate them. She ended up sitting on like 20 eggs, eventually I think she just refused to let them lay in her box anymore and they finally went to the other ones. She hatched 5, I finished out hatching another 9 in the house once she evacuated and the remaining duds after that got tossed. It was less than ideal, but all my girls insist on sharing one box and it was a cluster since we were gone.

I will be hatching some Olive Eggers (again) and one barnyard mix. The OE were really for my husband’s friend and now he said he doesn’t need them 🤦‍♀️ I didn’t care for the money, I just didn’t care to take care of anymore chicks 😂
