I guess that comes down to want more chicks or not. I know here the frenzy is slowing down, at least for straight runs.

I sell mine all as straight run and haven’t seen a slow down yet. We can always use meat for the freezer too.

I can always change the pricing too so people want them but I think they’ve sat there too long without her being on them because my husband didn’t grab them.

I’m wondering if the Muscovy eggs are fertile she just started laying eggs.

I remember someone here setting up a bobcat trap with a live something. It’s a setup where that live “bait” is totally protected but lures the bobcat to the trap. I thought it was you but I think I’m just remembering when the cockerel got away.

I just posted about our bobcat dilemma in the predators and pests forum, and that was suggested as the best trap setup, but I’m not really seeing how that would work in our situation...

Last year, we had some emotional distress with DD on our cockerel butcher day, and ended up with one escapee cockerel (Greenlegs) and one that DD had already selected to keep (Lucky). Of course the escapee came back, DD couldn’t bring herself to butcher it, and we kept debating the situation for a week. It was hot so we were letting the cockerels out in the afternoons, when our bobcat struck and took Lucky - never name a chicken Lucky!!!

I’m sorry she had a hard time butchering. I did my first two from beginning to end then told my husband you off them and I’ll clean them... I like it that way much better.

Well, I received the Buff/Blue/Gray Sebastopol hatching eggs this morning. I got the call early in the AM and picked them up at the post office. Our packages go through the Jacksonville sorting facility and they terrorize packages there. It's not looking good for these eggs.

The breeder packaged them beautifully but every single egg has a completely detached air cell and one of them has hair line cracks all the way around it (in the video). I don't have any way to temporarily incubate goose eggs vertically so I'm going to leave them in the box overnight and hope for the best.

Did I mention that I also ordered some more hatching eggs? I finally found some Buff English Orpington eggs for my friend and the breeder tossed in a couple Isabelle Leghorn eggs for me too. Just to really stick it to me USPS delayed that package and it's supposed to be here Monday. This is going to be a very expensive and likely poor hatching month.

Darn you USPS!!!

I think I lost alll or nearly all of my chicken eggs I was incubating over the course of the night. My Chinabator it seems decided that it wasn’t going to heat correctly and they spent most of the night at 95 degrees or lower. When I candled I found many of the eggs had the yellow look with no veins. Out of 22 eggs in that bator I had 12 that looked like they might be salvageable. So I put them in my IncuView this morning. I am just trying to figure out how long to give them before candling again and making a final call.

She’s a teen; her mind agrees with it but her heart doesn’t. My son and I actually did the work, but DD had to catch them last year. She felt like she was betraying them, and it was kind of a mess. I was very surprised that she wanted to try again with meatbirds this year; we will see how it goes!
