June Hatch-A-Long

Chicks only live 3 days inside my house and that’s it. Then they go to the brooder in the shed with everyone else and no heat... GASP I know... They don’t need heat when my shed is 85+ and they have siblings to warm them up.

I’ve lost 0 chicks from my own hatching. I’ve lost about 8 from TSC. That tells me a lot about these hatcheries that’s why I don’t buy chicks from anyone anymore unless TSC cuts me a deal I can’t refuse.

The two chicks from May's hatch are still in my kitchen at a month old. 😳😬 We ran out of room in the garage for new brooder boxes to keep the different age chicks separate.

All mine live together I have 6 week olds, 4 week olds, 2 week olds, 1 week olds, and 3 day olds. I’ve never had any issue.

The only reason why I have 6 week old chicks in the brooder is because they kept escaping 😆 They got real lost the other day to the point it took them a few hours to get back. The rooster called them in.

I had a shipment of chicks come in today. I want to combine them with the babies that hatched yesterday and today. If they're on medicated feed, do I need to worry about coccidiosis in the new hatchlings? Anything I need to know about combining home hatched chicks with hatchery chicks?

They won’t get coccidiosis until they are introduced the the ground. It comes from the ground. Wouldn’t they all be eating the same feed?

Only thing you’d have to worry about is bio security of the hatchery, but people add chicks from hatcheries to their own chicks all the time without an issue.

Almost all of the chicks I have right now are from my own eggs or my neighbors, I do have 9 Lavender Orpingtons that I got from Rural KIng that did great. I have only lost maybe 4 chicks this year and I've hatched well over a hundred. I'm waiting on a shipment from Hoover hatchery right now (faverolles and Spitzhaubens and a couple sapphire splash) so I can see just how healthy they will be. It'll be a good experiment. Just to see how well they travel. It's taking 2 days to get here, but seeing as it's not super cold I'm not to worried. I just hope they all make it.
I'm waiting on a shipment from Hoover too! USPS isn't updating the info at all. They left yesterday morning but tracking shows them still sitting in Iowa. Hope yours arrive quickly!
Right now we are calling him CaptainSparkyTater and hubby adds Underpants at the end. Temporary compromise until we name him. Lol!
My kiddo loved the Captain Underpants books and show.

I have no idea when some of my eggs are due to hatch... I did it again :barnie

I am going to candle them all tonight, but I assume they are all due in about a week and some I know for sure are due this weekend (marans).
I candle mine every night until I see internal pips. Then I say "Oh $h1t!," and start getting the brooder ready (after I take out the turner and pour some warm water into the 'bator.) :lau

Last night when I candled going into lockdown, I penciled the 18 day air cell line.
This morning when I shined a light through the outside of the bator into the eggs it looked like a few of the air cells had drawn in another 1/8 to 1/4 inch past the lines that I drew last night. These are also the more wiggly eggs.
Could this be the start of drawn down on those eggs?

All of the eggs have a slight variation on the lines from last night, but not nearly as dramatic as these four.
