Chicks only live 3 days inside my house and that’s it. Then they go to the brooder in the shed with everyone else and no heat... GASP I know... They don’t need heat when my shed is 85+ and they have siblings to warm them up.
I’ve lost 0 chicks from my own hatching. I’ve lost about 8 from TSC. That tells me a lot about these hatcheries that’s why I don’t buy chicks from anyone anymore unless TSC cuts me a deal I can’t refuse.
All mine live together I have 6 week olds, 4 week olds, 2 week olds, 1 week olds, and 3 day olds. I’ve never had any issue. The two chicks from May's hatch are still in my kitchen at a month old.We ran out of room in the garage for new brooder boxes to keep the different age chicks separate.
They won’t get coccidiosis until they are introduced the the ground. It comes from the ground. Wouldn’t they all be eating the same feed?I had a shipment of chicks come in today. I want to combine them with the babies that hatched yesterday and today. If they're on medicated feed, do I need to worry about coccidiosis in the new hatchlings? Anything I need to know about combining home hatched chicks with hatchery chicks?
I like Captain, but I also like Tater.
Davey (after Davey Jones)... Johnny (after Johnny Depp he was a pirate)... Ol Red (after Blake Sheltons song about a red tick like your pup) play the song for the kids the night like it lol...
Perhaps a compromise? Captain Tater
I'm waiting on a shipment from Hoover too! USPS isn't updating the info at all. They left yesterday morning but tracking shows them still sitting in Iowa. Hope yours arrive quickly!Almost all of the chicks I have right now are from my own eggs or my neighbors, I do have 9 Lavender Orpingtons that I got from Rural KIng that did great. I have only lost maybe 4 chicks this year and I've hatched well over a hundred. I'm waiting on a shipment from Hoover hatchery right now (faverolles and Spitzhaubens and a couple sapphire splash) so I can see just how healthy they will be. It'll be a good experiment. Just to see how well they travel. It's taking 2 days to get here, but seeing as it's not super cold I'm not to worried. I just hope they all make it.
My kiddo loved the Captain Underpants books and show.Right now we are calling him CaptainSparkyTater and hubby adds Underpants at the end. Temporary compromise until we name him. Lol!
I candle mine every night until I see internal pips. Then I say "Oh $h1t!," and start getting the brooder ready (after I take out the turner and pour some warm water into the 'bator.)I have no idea when some of my eggs are due to hatch... I did it again
I am going to candle them all tonight, but I assume they are all due in about a week and some I know for sure are due this weekend (marans).
