They won’t get coccidiosis until they are introduced the the ground. It comes from the ground. Wouldn’t they all be eating the same feed?

Only thing you’d have to worry about is bio security of the hatchery, but people add chicks from hatcheries to their own chicks all the time without an issue.

Thank you, that makes me feel a lot better. It's so easy to get attached to the ones you see hatch, you know?

A couple of signs that a chick is malpositioned. Once the other chicks have externally pipped, if you candle an egg that doesn't appear to have a drawn down air cell, it's possible that it's not in the correct position for hatching or it quit. The other is obviously that you will see an external pip in the small end of the egg. When pipped upsidedown it can take twice as long for the chick to hatch because it's both the internal and external pip in one go since there isn't an air cell in that end.

Hmm, some of the eggs have a marked change in the air cell from last night to this morning. By like 1/4 of an inch. Others..maybe just a hair. The eggs that are internally pipped had a tiny bit of difference in air cell from last night to today but not an obvious draw down like I've seen pics of.
The eggs with the marked difference have not pipped yet. And still a few other eggs don't have a very big air cell at all, one of them being a pipped one tonight.

How does baby breathe if it's at the wrong end?

Am I over thinking this? Should I be concerned ? Should I just have a glass of wine and chill?

Ok, breathing isn't working and I really need some wine. I've got an External pip now.

After I posted about the internal, I looked again and thought I saw a hairline crack. Even got kiddo out of bed to doublecheck... yep, it's a crack. Ok, posted something then was gonna head to bed. One last look and ...WHA???
It's a pip!! Anybody got a paper bag I can breathe into?? Its only day 19.
Eggs were removed from nest boxes twice a day and kept at 65 before going in the bator. However this egg was laid the morning that all eggs went into the bator. Talk about fresh!

If I cross an Ameraucana hen(Hoover Hatchery) who lays brighter blue eggs with an Australorp Roo, what might be my percentages of the possible egg color outcomes?

I have no history on the Ameraucana but she and her sisters were/are grey under feathers with rusty or red tips on the neck and some of the body.
If the hen has 2 blue genes I should get some sort of olive egg, right? But if she has one white and one blue, I could get brown or green eggs?

The Australorp roo will give you a green egg. If she has 2 blue genes, it’s 100% chance of green, and if she has one it’s 50/50.

I don’t think Hoover sells actual Ameraucana, they’re all really Easter Eggers so there’s no way to know if she has two blue copies.

I just checked the day 3 F1 Olive Eggers and I have 100% fertility!

Wrong end pips are the take a glass of wine pips. Malpositions where they cannot pip are next to impossible for anyone but the most experienced to save, and those are usually the ones where it has a reason to not hatch. If it pips it should be fine, but it will take twice as long to hatch usually.

They’re not breathing at all until they break into the air cell. If they break into the small end of the egg, that’s where cluckndoodle mentioned it’s an internal and external pip. At that point, they’re breathing the outside air just the same as a regular chick in internal pip stage is breathing the air in the air cell. Does that make sense?

also those chicks will all be different, some will draw down (the marked change you’re seeing) really quickly and pip and then wait and some will be slower but will pip and zip and hatch very quickly together.

Day 19 isn’t bad for an external pip. I would be surprised if that chick comes out before 24 hours, which means your hatch would start at the end of day 20.... right on time. Even if it’s out before that, I often have my hatches complete by the actual exact time of day 21.

The first pips are usually the ones that wait the longest to hatch.

Hatch day today!!! Exhausting and anxiety ridden but i got some bantam brahamas making there way into the world as we speak. One hatched and five to go ( I know, its a small hatch)! This lil dude flipped over after a quick nap and is doing great.

If the chick pips the small end, then the internal & external pip are one. Most of these, I'm told, hatch without assistance but they can take quite a while from (external) pip to zip. I believe I remember someone saying 48 hours? I've had a few but at the time I didn't know what was normal or abnormal so I let them alone and they hatched just fine.
