June Hatch-A-Long

Did you order your Bieles off ebay? I did and it's my first set of ordered eggs, they are due next week.
I've got everything crossed they arrive well packed and in good shape because live chicks...if one can find them... are ridiculously expensive!
Especially with shipping! Are you going to sell chicks anytime soon?

My recently hatched chicks or the Bieles?
Probably. I'll sell some of my current chicks and have 6 that could go today, but they are black. :D On the Bieles I'm waiting to see what arrives ok and if any hatch. I have plans for those both on their own and crossed to my RRs.

What are RRs?

Wish you were closer... Even though I travel a lot lol

Red Rangers. I'm working on a self sustainable meatier bird and when I ordered the RRs it was months ago before I had heard of Bieles. I know others have tried some RR x heritage crosses with good results so hopefully I can do something similar.

I wish I was too!
Nothing much to choose from around here for chickens without some serious travel. We are mainly cattle and sheep it seems.

edit: typos

There’s a couple of breeding charts from when they created Legbars to be an autosexing breed. Candace Waldon used it and references it on her website for creating the opal legbar by crossing in Isabel Leghorns to Cream Legbar. how you select and cross back determines if you can keep the autosexing traits. This level of genetics gets far beyond any of my understanding but I don’t think it’s one of the more complicated concepts, so I’d look into it.

would be super cool to use the same to maintain autosexing traits in a broiler/heritage cross based off of Biels. And a really productive personal project because you just eat all the culls.

Thank you! I had wondered if the autosexing would show up in the progeny. I'll be sure to check that out.

Some of the RR have yellow spots on the heads, which as I understand is linked to the barring gene. I've got some elastic bands on the way to mark those because they are just growing too fast for zip ties.

Just saw the new Avie! Ah-stinkin'dorable!

So are we sure this enough room for 6 chicks (max) for days 1-3 before we move them to the garage? It seems so tiny! I’ve got a mason jar size feeder coming, but I’ll ductape some of the anti slip mat to the top of the heat plate to give them a little more room.

Also, will they be able to reach this drinker? The nipple is about 2.5inches off the ground, or do I need to put it on something lower?

First time chick mum....I’m literally nesting. 😂

Yes! They need just a 1x1.5 ft space minimum for 6 chicks those first couple of days.
Good luck!!!!
