June Hatch-A-Long

Not a good time to order chicks. I would avoid it at all cost. With everything that is going on, it’s not worth it. Ohio has had a bad time with shipping because my eggs took two extra days to get here... with knowing that there’s no way I’d do chicks.

We got extremely lucky with our chicks shipped from Hoover's last week. We ordered them in early April, hoping that the crazy would have died down by the time they were hatched. They shipped late on June 23, and they arrived very early on June 25. Thank God! I was so relieved, and every single one of them was lively and healthy, and they're still doing great, 5 days later! :) I'm in Ohio, and our regular mail has been slowed down by at least a couple of days, so I was just about in a panic about these chicks. Thankfully for us, it had a very good outcome.

Can’t get over the 4.5 week size difference in these goslings!

I haven’t been around much but I did ask about being a part of this hatch-a-long so.... The first try of putting eggs under one of my broodies didn’t work out. The eggs weren’t fertile so that was a week lost. Try #2 was successful. We have babies! :ya They started hatching last night.

We only put 3 eggs under her. We have 2 babies but the last egg hasn’t hatched. I don’t know if it is viable or not. I’m trying to give it a little more time before I go in and check and/or pull it. But for now, we have these 2 fluff butts! :love

The female is a Calico Princess and the male is a white Silkie. Looks like the lighter colored one is going to have the Silkie head poof. The other one is more chipmunk stripy so maybe more like the mom. Idk but they sure are cuties!

Ok, I got impatient. Mom had tried moving the egg to and fro, from this spot to another spot to leaving it altogether and just focusing on the hatched chicks. So I went and pulled it and checked it. It was almost fully formed but no movement at all. It quit. Saw a couple of blood spots but they were tiny. But we have 2 very healthy fluffies that mom can dote over. I am happy. Now we get to see what they will grow up to look like. 🥰

Well, I need to decide what to do with the remaining two eggs. I candled all 3 that were left, one had internally pipped and drowned, so I opened it up. It was half ayam cemani, and the only one in my batch of that mix, so pretty sad about that one. That leaves me with two eggs. Neither have internally pipped, but I don’t see movement in either. How long should I give them? Hatch day was yesterday.

Patience is not something I was wired with 😂
Patience is a learned behavior. The only way to get it is by experiencing frustrations and trials. People say, "I'm praying for patience." Then the stock answer is, "No, don't do that!" But it doesn't make any difference. Everyone gets the opportunity again and again to develop patience. 🤷‍♀️ Just the way the world is. I'm a much more patient person than I EVER aspired to be. 😋

You can give them as long as you like (unless they start to smell bad). I would probably go another two, maybe three days. Late hatchers do not (statistically) tend to thrive, but there are always exceptions, and I always feel like they deserve a chance.
