June Hatch a Long

Thank you el pollo rey, I thought you would have to turn but confused as to how you would because I thought the air sack had to stay at the top.

I can't wait to get started and get some chicks. I will have to start with shipped eggs as I only have 6 layers and no cockerals at the moment but hopefully I can 'grow' some in the incubator

Hi all, I am hoping to join in hatching within the next week or so, probably be too late for June though    Is there a July hatch-along?

I am learning lots by reading this thread and wondered about the hatching in egg cartons so would like to ask a question if I may.  If you incubate upright in a carton (airsack at top), am I correct in thinking that you don't turn the eggs at all throughout the incubation time?  If my assumption is correct, does this mean you don't need to get an incubator that automatically turns the eggs (I work every day so can't turn eggs between 7.30am and 5pm) Sorry to be so dense but need to learn as hoping to get my incubator and eggs this week.

hi! If you hatch in cartons, you'll still need to turn them. Given your work schedule you have a few options. Keep in mind turning eggs 3 times a day is fine. You could hand turn before work, after work, and once just before going to bed. If you're buying an incubator, an autoturner usually sets them upright (like a carton) and tilts them back and forth. You can duplicate that without an auto turner by tilting the cartons 45° each time you "turn". Some people put a block of wood under one side and tilt the whole incubator. That didn't work for me as it messed up how my fan circulated - temps and humidity went wonky. I made a homemade turner to tilt the cartons from outside the incubator, but many open the lid and do it that way. Good luck!

Geez takes me days to get to this point to get him to agree on the smallest incubator and 2 seconds for you to pursuade him to let me go for the bigger one.

thats a good question fo iluvmyduckies but i have not seen her on this morning star

I have 6 eggs progressing nicely toward a June 10/11 hatch date, and I've also got a broody hen bringing along another 6 for the same date. I'm hoping to be able to slip the incubator babies underneath her when the time comes. This is her first time brooding and my first time relying on this incubator, so hopefully between the two of us we can get a few new chicks into the world.

Meanwhile, on the other side of the brooder, here's the results of another first-time broody. Love these Cochins!
