June Hatch a Long

I have 6 eggs progressing nicely toward a June 10/11 hatch date, and I've also got a broody hen bringing along another 6 for the same date. I'm hoping to be able to slip the incubator babies underneath her when the time comes. This is her first time brooding and my first time relying on this incubator, so hopefully between the two of us we can get a few new chicks into the world.

Meanwhile, on the other side of the brooder, here's the results of another first-time broody. Love these Cochins!

moms lacing is beautiful,,,,cochins make good momas

Hi all, I am hoping to join in hatching within the next week or so, probably be too late for June though

Is there a July hatch-along?

I am learning lots by reading this thread and wondered about the hatching in egg cartons so would like to ask a question if I may. If you incubate upright in a carton (airsack at top), am I correct in thinking that you don't turn the eggs at all throughout the incubation time? If my assumption is correct, does this mean you don't need to get an incubator that automatically turns the eggs (I work every day so can't turn eggs between 7.30am and 5pm) Sorry to be so dense but need to learn as hoping to get my incubator and eggs this week.
Like you, we work so we purchased a turner to 1.) No manual turning required and 2.) No opening and closing the incubator which can make the humidity and temperatures go up and down. When we go to lockdown on the day 19, the hatching eggs will be placed in egg cartons that have had their tops removed and if there are peaks between the middle section of the carton these will be cut down. I have recently heard some put holes at the button of each egg compartment for humidity to get to the eggs. Will read up on that in the next few days because our little darling go in lockdown on Friday....YEAH!

You must be so excited. Today I ordered my incubator, brooder and hatching eggs

I am getting silver laced orpingtons, red sex links cos I just love them and RIR. My incubator will arrive before my eggs but I have a backup incubator if necessary which is manual turning. I am just wishing my life away at the moment to get everything and set those eggs up. I don't know how I am going to contain myself for the next 20 odd days. I will probably be a nightmare to live with till that hatch

When you get your incubator you can occupy your self by setting it up and running it to get it stabilized for your eggs homecoming. I wish I had my incubator more than a few days before receiving the fertile eggs. We only had a day to test it out and fortunately it seemed to stay steady for the most part but I have read others here who have had some issues. Don't know the cause. You may want to purchase another thermometer for inside the incubator along with an additional hygrometer. You can get a combination at any DIY store for $9 - $15 US which should be around 6 -10 in GBP. We use a digital one inside ours. You always have this site with very knowledgeable/experienced hatchers and lots of encouragement. Ask and you will get an answer from someone. Congrats!

Good idea, I will get another thrermometer and hygrometer just to be on the safe side and double check temps on incubator as I have read on BYC that lots of the incubators that come with the thermometers and hygrometers are not that accuate. I read earlier that somebody got a set for reptiles that was really accurate and I think I will look tomorrow if I can lay my hands on some.

Did I mention that I am super excited

Ok, just ignore my over enthusiasm, I promise to calm down now

I am totally with you. I am only on my second hatch and I think I am less fearful than the first time but I am very excited to add Swedish Flower Hen chicks and Ameraucana to my flock. If you read alot of the forums, there are some very seasoned people hatching chicks and they get just as excited as if it was the first. So enjoy!

Swedish Flower are beautiful birds as are Ameraucanas. I hope they all hatch for you.

i am going to be reading everything that's posted so I can learn as much as possible and hopefully not do anything that would harm the chickies.

My eggs will only be ready to hatch close to the end of June but, hopefully it will be a successful hatch - this month is going to be the longest month of the year!

Suppose to have hatching eggs today - but no peeping - maybe rocking (3 different eggs). This is only our second hatch and wondering if this is normal? I seem to remember we heard peeping last time before hatching the evening before. Scared something has happened and no hatch.

We set 12 Americana blue eggs, 10 buff orps, 2 blue orp, and 11 lot of mixed bantys and mystery eggs. We set the first 2 doz the night of Mother's Day so counted that Mon. as day one. Tues. our daughter was given 11 eggs and we put those in Tues. just after lunch of same week. We went to lockdown about 11:30 Friday nt.

LG, auto fan and turner.

Justified worry or too impatient?

Thanks,

Amanda
