Question for those who've hatched with broodies. I'm serious although this may sound like I'm not. Do they do some version of lock down? Do they sit on the nest without getting up for those last days? My reason for asking is this, each day I take Betty off her nest and set her outside where she'll stare into nothingness for a few minutes then jump up and run around the coop a few times with her wings outspread and hackles flared like she's possessed, eat a bit, drink, then right back to her nest. Should I NOT take her off her nest the last few days? She doesn't get up at all except when I move her.

it's been my experience not to intevien at all she will come off to poo and drink and possibly eat if the mood strikes she is most likely freaking out about your good willed intervention ,,,,,,,,

Actually she doesn't resist at all. The reason I take her out once a day is I left her alone in her brooding pen the first four days or so before the real eggs arrived. I never saw her off the nest or any food/water gone, no droppings - none. I was at work and my husband heard her crashing against the door trying to tear it down to get outside. Not wanting that to happen again (especially with real eggs that would've been trampled), I started taking her out and let her return as soon as she desired. She doesn't even growl at me - although I doubt she'd let anyone else even touch her! I leave the door open and she gets back to her nest on her own after about ten minutes. Still, day 16, no droppings in her pen, no food eaten, except from the little dish by her nest.

Look who joined the party- three days early, I might add. :woot
