June Hatch a Long

Lord have mercy this is a chatty BUNCH!!! Here is my hatch. Neighbor gave me 35 eggs. Found out at day 7 we had some serious fertility issues. At day 14 culled down to 12, at 18 down to 10 for hatching. I got 9 live chicks! These are RIR and BR roos over RIR,BR,and BO hens And today is hatch day. Only one at the bottom left made it on hatch day. It hatched after midnight....lol I did have 2 that were a little sticky, once chicks started hatching humidity got a little high, but all in all very pleased with this bunch. Got another bunch of the same due on the 11th. Same for this bunch. Started with 24 culled down to 12. Havent made final cull yet.
good Job jac !

I candled mine (40 of them) on day 12 and removed 13 clears and 4 that had stopped developing some time back. The clears were mostly from 2 pens - BB red and blue silkies - I picked these up locally so they weren't handled roughly by the post office. I am new to hatching. What causes clears? Does that mean they weren't fertilized or would there have been something wrong with my incubating or turning technique? I have 23 left that look to me to be developing. Thanks!

Nice job especially in light of all theissues you've had.

I have a question, if I have been using a cardboard egg carton in the incubator from day one, when I go into lockdown how should I position them? I've had them on their side with the large end of the eggs slightly pointing up. Does anyone have pictures to share of their lockdown? Im using an LG forced air- so im wondering if I could just set something under the wire on each corner to raise the wire up

A clear means it was not fertilized, or possibly died the very first day. If you crack it open it will look like an egg from the store... Just whites and yellow yolk, no veins, etc. Blood rings, on the other hand, mean an early death. Veins started to develop and have broken down. 13 clears sounds like a fertility issue, not an incubation issue. As for the 4 quitters, it happens. 4 out of 27 eggs (not counting the infertile ones) doesn't sound too bad to me, but others with more experience might chime in.

No and no. Their poop looks normal and bottoms are clean.

How about air? No drafts, but nice fresh air needed! Are your vents clean/clear? I don't have a cabinet, so not sure how the air gets in, but worth a look! Just another thought. Can't imagine how disheartening that would be.

I don't have pics that are very good to show it but in my incubator I hatch in cartons. I mark my air cells so at lockdown I tilt them in the carton so the whole air cell is above the edges of the carton walls.
