JUNE - JULY HATCH-ALONG!!!!!!!

Pics
So I have a question: I had some problems with membranes drying and trapping some chicks in the egg, but not others. Even with my getting in and out of the incubator my humidity never dropped below 80, and also I'm in ohio where our native humidity is in the 60s. I'm using the Nurture Right 360, maybe the sensor is broken?

I have 2 Nurture Right 360s, an IncuView, a Hovabator, and a Little Giant. One thing I've noticed is that all of them return to humidity faster than I expected but varying speeds. The 3 plastic ones definitely regain normal temp and humidity levels faster than the styrofoam ones but after doing so many hatches I 100% see a difference in how quickly the membrane dries when I have opened an Incubator vs not opening it regardless of what the hygrometer reads. So whenever possible I try not to open the incubators but in situations where I do (like yesterday when I opened it mid zipping to add another egg) I will actually warm some distilled water in the microwave and put a few drops into the incubator. The warmed water creates steam which actually seems to increase the humidity properly, just don't add too much as it works really well and can cause the humidity to spike or even increase the temps in the incubator if you add too much or heat it too much.

Not mine, but I picked them up from the breeder myself, since she's local. I believe they were all laid within a day or two of my picking them up, and I treated them like glass getting them home.
I only ask because I had both sticky chicks and shrink wrapped chicks in my last hatch. Sometimes additional things are at play. I read once sometimes stuck chicks can be a result of turning too.

There’s so much at play, it doesn’t always fall into a formula of X causes Y. Sometimes X causes B which causes C which may or may not cause Y.

I’m also with cluckndoodle, opening even quick can set some things in motion. I use warm spray water to spike humidity. Or I wait until a chick hatched and it’s wetness spikes humidity.

It can be a crap shoot. A five second open could dry out a chick. But I’ve pulled an egg out at least five times to check progress, it had to be out at least ten minutes total to work on it, and STILL had them hatch on their own. No shrink wrapping.

I know none of this helps. Just passing along experiences ...

Names are always hard for me because once they have a name I fall in love and then they turn into roosters, lol! I keep holding on to Fizzgig, the below frizzle because he hasn't crowed yet...but we all know that has to be a rooster :lau. Little bugger is so sweet and still steps into my hands when I reach down.

Let's see, some really girly names so the Olive Egger chick can't turn roo on me...Summer? Sunny? Solstice?

I was trying to be clever because my daughter is taking Latin...I thought I could name her after the Latin word for strength/might, which is "Viribus" and I was like oh! I'll name her Viri! My daughter looked at me and said...that's basically saying "Man". :th I told you if I name this chick it's going to turn into a rooster! :lau
Lol! You could call her "Nike," who is the goddess of victory, but these days that sounds like a shoe, haha. Or you could try "Juno," queen of Olympus, or "Minerva," a mighty goddess with an extraordinary birth, armed with shield and spear, or "Fortuna," goddess of luck. Or Julia, since she was born in July - that's a Roman name, too.

I always name my eggs, and then change the names if needed. Fizzgig, how sweet!

Well, I woke up to another little cutie! The Marans egg that had pipped when I moved it from broody to incubator hatched overnight, and this little chick is healthy and happy. I have a slight concern over the short outer toes, which I understand is often linked to the feathered feet. I won't be breeding any of these birds, but I would like to know if the short toes are likely to give this bird any trouble. Seems to be walking fine, from what I can tell on day one.

Does anyone have experience with short toes and Marans?

Love those names!! I'll have to run them by my daughter and let her pick one of those names! She's a teenager and therefore never second guesses her choices, lol! I somehow feel like it's more likely to be a pullet if she picks the name as well. :lau

Yay!! So cute! I'm glad it hatched out perfectly for you! :wee
I've hatched quite a few Marans but I don't recall seeing short toes...I wonder if that's something I would have overlooked though? I can't imagine it causing any long term issues. I'll have to go back through previous hatch pics of my Marans and see if I notice any stubby toes.

I know I’ve seen those short toes on the marans discussion thread of BYC, but they were mostly talking about how to breed it out because they wanted to breed to the SOP. I vaguely recall pictures of larger birds with the condition, so I don’t think that they were particularly troubled by it... Your maras baby is just so cute!!!:love I tried to hatch marans eggs a month ago but none of mine made it out of the egg. Congrats again!
