Jungle Fowl

I got a couple hens for a guy in Texas by the name of Al Novosad (sp) 979 936 8991. Real easy guy to work with. I don't know if he has any left or not. I should have some later in the summer. If you are looking for a breeding pair it will take until later in the year unless someone knows of fool proof way of sexing jungle fowl chicks.

Our 4H group took a field trip out to Mr. Novasad's place today. They have a truly amazing set up and gorgeous birds!

I only met him on the phone, seemed like a real nice guy though. Did you have any pictures from the field trip. I tried to call him last week to let him know I was posting his name as seller and make sure that was o.k. with him, but didn't hear back. What's his setup like? Did he have extra jungle fowl for sale?

I have a Grey Junglefowl male, and I am breeding him to some hens that are 1/4 Grey junglefowl. I expect to get some birds off that which are feathered like a Grey, but have enough chicken characteristics to keep from confusing them.
my point is to breed chickens that produce the same feathers as a pure Grey, so I can eventually supply the market with birds that are cheaper and easier to raise.
Well, that is one goal anyways.

Anyone interested in raising hybrids between Grey Junglefowl and longtail chickens, shoot me a PM. I will be glad to supply some hatching eggs or young birds to those interested.

i would like to see an actual breed of chicken developed from these hybrids eventually. As the Grey's genes recombine, the birds will feather out more and more like greys are supposed to.

Here is my Grey rooster and a few of his girls.

Any chicks yet W.C.? I keep meaning to ask you the nature of your 1/4 jungle fowl mix... are they skitish and can they fly?

An update on my birds: My Grey Jungle Fowl have been laying and I now have a dozen eggs in the incubator...

I'm very interested in working on the long-tail mix- I have Sumatras and some other mixes including composite birds with South American blood. Lovely bird!!

I did have a hen hatch out 15 chicks (Daddy is pure Grey, mama is 1/4 Grey, so the chicks are 5/8 grey) but she is a sorry mama and only has three left.
I have some more due to hatch, we will see what happens.

To answer the other question, they are a little skittish with me, and real skittish with strangers. And they can fly really good. I had one of those 1/4 grey hens set a nest in a squirrel nest. Up in a tree. Never would have believed it. Still kinda don't even though I saw it with my own eyes. She has one chick, but it is only 1/8 grey.
