Just a friendly little reminder.

We respect that people have opinions and want to express them. We appreciate those that do so in a kind and respectful manner. We acknowledge that nobody is perfect and we all (including staff) slip up from time to time.

What it comes down to is intent and demeanor. Some people get a note from a staff member that a post was inappropriate and they say "Sorry" but others get a note and then say stuff like, "Who are you to tell me what I can and can't say... this is America and I have freedom of speech!!"

Who would you rather have hang out with you, your kids and your other friends?

well in the form of a note is different. i think you should be able to say whatever you want. if it offends the person on the other end then they can say so but i understand why things should be kept clean on a public forum.

over time I have come to realize that because of the nature of poultry keeping it is simple enough, economical enough and they don't weigh much which makes them an excellent project for children, the handicapped (including myself in that category) and people on limited incomes. Could be why the group as a whole is maybe more sensitive to some harsh commentary (including myself here again, as disher outer and as sensitive) so sorry for my rude posts and thank you for this site.

I really do try and keep my cool and a level head; and when it is not directly aimed at me I have better luck. When it is personal, and there is no doubt about it, it's harder. Some trolls visit these types of forums just to do this sort of thing and I try and not feed them. Boy did I give one a 10 course meal yesterday lol!!! And for that I do apologize to the rest of the board, but I think we should have day set aside each month to have open season on trolls!

Our moderators are pretty expert at discerning trolls from members with good intentions. Report the trolls and let our expert marksmen (women) take care of them.

That way all our members can be good cops and we can do the dirty bad cop work.

You have a great idea, but the thing is that a troll to one might not be a troll to someone else. It depends on individual perception sometimes.

Like the normally levelheaded member who posts a "hot" topic that gets out of hand. That would be trolling involuntarily.

Or the member who gives a quackdown which sparks an argument would seem a troll to the person it is aimed at, yet everyone else might say

Of course there are obvious trolls. The ones who join up just to get their jollies by seeing how many knickers they can twist.

Here is a great place to read about trolls.

I like the way the moderators leave closed threads up rather than removing them - it's kind of interesting to see how things devolve and the precisely orchestrated moment at which a moderator steps in. It's very impressive and educational - you can look back at things and see how it is they go wrong. Very good reminders.

Tone is one of the hardest things to convey on the Internet. Your words might not be intended to be harsh or defensive, but unless you're a master with emoticons and phrasing, things often come across in a way I don't think people necessarily intend. And you never know when you're going to hit what may be entertaining to you but a sore subject to someone else. I've been horrified by a few threads other people clearly found entertaining. That's what happens when a small "city" of 30,000 people all co-exist in the same "room" more or less..

These ones!!! Just let me blast one a month and that will take care of the urge,, I promise really!!!!! Really I do!!!!!! The mean ones!

Depends on the content. If it was adult or otherwise inappropriate and too much work to clean up we remove it. It is a judgment call by the staff to see if there is value to the community to leaving the thread in the forum. Often they are really long random ramblings, rants, etc. that aren't worth cleaning up and returning to the forum.
