Just a friendly reminder on coccidiosis vs cocci

I never give anything unless they are showing symptoms.
But Corid is safe enough to use "just in case".
Fecal test at a vet is even better!

Yep you would just smear a THIN layer on a glass slide, burn underneath for a few seconds to heat fix, stain (we used DifQuik stain at the hospital) and I can't remember the exact magnification power you view it at, but it requires a drop of immersion oil to view on the slide. At least that's how we did it.

To view COCCIDIA you have to do a fecal float, you won't see them on a smear. That's where you put a tablespoon or so of poo in the saline float solution in a tube, top that with a cover slide, wait 10 minutes, slap that cover on a big glass slide and you can see the coccidia under the microscope after they float to the top and stick to the slide you had attached to the top of the tube.

If you have the stuff, I say go for it! I loved working in the lab looking at parasites. So cool. :)

Yes that's the impression that I'm getting from browsing other farm boards. A lot of people just use it as a shortened form I guess. :)
Many do say cocci. :( I said "cocci" to my vet once and she quickly explained the difference, so now I say "coccidia or coccidiosis", never cocci. :) I am so glad you said something.

Yes! x100!
You may just be looking for one thing, but they will know everything they're looking at at the vets office. A lot of times you can have two different organisms that require two different treatments.

I think the complete set up is about $200 to perform these tests home.

Thanks for telling me! :plbb
