His original name was sweets! He has been a great roo for the hens. I really think it's just when he gets overly excited which turns into aggression somehow. Time will tell!He sounds like a butthole.

That, I believe, is a rumor started by a rooster.Ha ha! We are quite attached unfortunately, plus since he is over a year don't they say not to eat them anymore because they taste bad?

To throw in my two cents, its all preference.the meat is fine, just tougher. Best in soups or slow cooker. I have some coworkers that always ask to buy my old hens and roos, they loooove the taste of the meat. It's extra chicken-y than what we are used to at the store.

My rooster does that. He runs towards me every time he sees me. He is a big boy too. He hasn't ever hurt me. He is just excited. He did chase the girls some this spring, but when I say "no" he stops and runs to me. He thinks he's a dog.
If you are worried about your rooster try carrying a net with you. It will give you confidence and if needed, a method of defense. If he is becoming aggressive, you should rid yourself and your hens of him.
Chickens should bring you amusement and joy, not stress. Good luck.
Nah...just make sure you rest the cleaned carcass for 3-4 days....then pressure cooker(my preference) or low and slow in oven.Ha ha! We are quite attached unfortunately, plus since he is over a year don't they say not to eat them anymore because they taste bad?

I'd be worried that little ball of tape would end up inside one of the chickens. Quick filing to dull the sharpness will do the trick.Giving his spurs a little file will totally make him less scary or like one of the members suggested one time put little balls of duct tape on the ends like boxing gloves.
Like Buddah! I'm finding longer carcass rest really helps! My grandmother cooked older roosters and laid out hens in the pressure cooker. She said it made them soft as butter.![]()
