Results of necropsy on Victoria---
Crop contents were feed, corn, rice and all the liquid I had been pouring into her for the last week. Outlet at bottom of crop was apparently blocked by a large piece of onion, you know, the hard stem end that you cut out before you cook with the rest of the onion. I don't give my chickens onions, but the top had blown off the composter when we had some high winds last week, and the chickens must have gotten in there. Holes were dug in the garbage, and things were all moved around. Victoria has always been quite the pig, first at the feed trough, and this time she apparently did herself in. I always thought it was such a good idea to have the composter IN the garden, so I could just move it and till everything in. Maybe I should rethink the location, or spend the time to chop everything that goes in there. Aack.
I know one thing---next time I will do crop surgery right away, within a couple of days. Hope this never happens again, though. Thanks, bonnieb and rocketrooster for your kind words and support. I just came in from burying her. I am sad, but I was prepared for her to die. Just wish I had known then what I know now.
