just did surgery on impacted crop! 3/4 RIP coach

cute guys, really cute, bonnie and coach (the superglue patch seems to be holding so far), had some scrambled eggs with avian vitamins and some finely chopped lasagna. this is the best appetite she has had in 3 weeks. one last thing,,,,, i did get the impression she would have liked the curling iron after i blow dried her (which i did do)

If I were you, I don't think I would take avian vitamins................LOL! You might start wanting to dust bathe or something.

And she would look really cute with curly tail feathers.

',%20''); she ate some mousies ( which are like wax worms with long tails), more chopped lasagna and more scrambled eggs. her chest was still closed and dry after eating and i will be eager to compare her crop tomorrow morning with it now. javascript:insert_text('

So glad Coach is improving. I waited too long---Victoria died this afternoon. I am going to do a necropsy tomorrow to see what, if anything, was in her crop. Next time, I'll do surgery before the hen gets so debilitated. Of course, she could have something else wrong too.

Congratulations to Coach. I hope she makes your husband do a really tough workout!

so sad about victoria. i agree with necropsy, i know it may sound gruesome to some, but it may be an opportunity to try this surgery. maybe her death won't be in vain, maybe she can help you to save the next life. bonnie

Casey,
I'm sorry to hear about Victoria. Even though some people find it rather gross and cruel I recommend going ahead with the autopsy.
I've done a few at home surgeries and autopsies, they bring more peace of mind than you know...
Keep the body in a cool place until then.

Bonniebe,
Great to hear! I hope all is well.
I have some skin glue in the house I bought from a medical supply store online, I use it all the time.

GLUE IS YOUR FRIEND!

Results of necropsy on Victoria---
Crop contents were feed, corn, rice and all the liquid I had been pouring into her for the last week. Outlet at bottom of crop was apparently blocked by a large piece of onion, you know, the hard stem end that you cut out before you cook with the rest of the onion. I don't give my chickens onions, but the top had blown off the composter when we had some high winds last week, and the chickens must have gotten in there. Holes were dug in the garbage, and things were all moved around. Victoria has always been quite the pig, first at the feed trough, and this time she apparently did herself in. I always thought it was such a good idea to have the composter IN the garden, so I could just move it and till everything in. Maybe I should rethink the location, or spend the time to chop everything that goes in there. Aack.

I know one thing---next time I will do crop surgery right away, within a couple of days. Hope this never happens again, though. Thanks, bonnieb and rocketrooster for your kind words and support. I just came in from burying her. I am sad, but I was prepared for her to die. Just wish I had known then what I know now.

you know, sometimes, no matter what you do, or how hard you try to do things "right", sometimes stuff just happens. you can spend a lot of time making things perfect, cuisinarting (sp?) your compost, chicken and predator proofing and stuff just happens. you learned a lot these past few days, in my mind that is a big deal, so if this ever comes your way again, you (and i) will know what to do. coach is still superglued and holding, i just came up from feeding her some mealworms. so far, so good......try not to beat yourself up too badly, death is unfortunately part of life. if you did the best you could for her while she was alive, in my book, you're a good chicken-mama. bonnie
