just got home from work (i work the 7p-7a shift), stopped by the bait shop to get more wax worms. i would have preferred mousies, but they were out. whenever i check on coach i creep down the stairs and peek around the corner to see if she is still standing. she still is!! i was somewhat concerned because she hasn't had a huge (or even good appetite) for any food other than live, so today i put some of her regular food in a small dish and added the worms, and SHE ATE THE FOOD INSTEAD OF THE WORMS!!!!!!!!! HAPPY DAY!!!!
also, her chest is still dry, AND.......... she has a little plump to her drummies!!!!!!!!! what a tough little chickie-poo! i love my girl! also she had quite a large, formed poop. in one end, out the other and no leakage in between. if all goes well i'm going to try her back out with the others probably on friday. thanks for all your interest. bonni and coach javascript:insert_text('

Yay for Coach! What a great success! You could hire out as the A-number one Chicken Surgeon! I am so happy for you and for Coach. And thank you for your kind words about Victoria. I think maybe there was more to it than the onion piece. It seems that anything that they could get down their throat should be able to go on through. So maybe she had a tumor or some other digestive issue or blockage farther down. I just don't know. So I am OK with it.

Now be sure Coach doesn't go out without her featherspray to keep her blow-dried "do" in place!

coach report for thursday feb 25, partly cloudy with a chance of chicken!! seriously, things are going well. i have just come off a 3 night stretch so my reports have been sketchy. she is still in the basement, superglue in place, appears to be eating well with no crop swelling. i think i am qoing to try putting her out tomorrow with the others, if it doesn't work it is back inside. my hubby will be gone out west skiing for a week, so she probably will be in the dining room in her crate, not the basement. well, it is breakfast and bed for me. bonnie and coach, signing out

I am so thrilled that coach is doing well. I had a slw named henriette but was to late with her crop impaction. What did you use to make the incision and how large was the incision??

I just happened to stumble across this post. I am new to BYC and I have learned sooo much from this site! I have been a vet tech for 17years, 6 of those years have been in emergency/critical care. I am impressed with how well you handled the situation. It stinks that not everyone else is as lucky as me. I have access to 24 hour vet care at little to no cost. But, we so rarely treat chickens (almost never), that sometimes I know more than the vet does! I was thinking, is there a video anywhere out there showing how to do this "surgery"? When it comes to any kind of medical procedure, it is always better to see it done than to just read about it (and even more educational to do it yourself)! Anyways, best of luck with Coach!

coach moved back outside today. all the other girls are out henny-pecking around so for now coach has the run of the coop. for tonight she is back in her dog crate with a heat lamp over it. she seemed a lot happier outside but i caught her eating the straw bedding!!! what the hay, i mean, straw!! '
