That is very cool that your hen is broody! I have absolutely NO experience with a broody hen, but we sure can cheer you on! Plus, maybe someone else on this thread can advise you on "natural hatching"

Smallfry,
You didn't mention a rooster??

Hope you have one in addition to the barred rock and RIRs. As I understand it, a broody BR is not really common if she came froma hatchery. Can you try to build her some protection? Maybe a partial cover with a box or barrel? or a wire fence around her with a shade cloth cover? She will need some kind of shade, not to mention rain and predator protection. If you want the chicks, you may want to consider an alternative plan if she decides to quit. Good luck with her! ........stan

Hey Short Circuit,

Very pretty rooster you have there. Mine will be backyard mutts just so I can get the hang of it before trying it on expensive eggs. My game bird gets broody I swear every month and I'd love for her to hatch some out but has anybody every experienced whether or not the chicks will take on moms personality? Her and I just clash all the time, I don’t know if I would want that in the chicks. I know from my horses that you do not want to breed an aggressive mare as the foal will learn so I am assuming it is the same with chicks?

Oh well. I couldn’t help but candle my eggs last night. Only day 3 for me, couldn’t see anything yet. Sooooo excited. Guess I’ll have to wait a little longer yet.

thank you I think so as well
haha this is my first time as well mine will be purebred only cuz that's all I have laying at the moment haha
I candled mine day 3 for me as well couldn't see anything either
unfortunately ive never experienced a broody hen but hops someday to have that pleasure

HAHA, yes, I wouldn't call it a pleasure. Goldilocks tries to take my hand off everytime I get near the eggs. Doesn't she know I have customers to please??? Oh well, I am waiting for day 8 to candle some more. Waiting....waiting....

May 1st hatch date in the Preschool...any buddies? So we are attempting to hatch 16 large dark cornish on or about the first of may. Day one was 4-11-11. We have lots of little 3 and 4 year old helpers and if i make it thru the next 19 days without pulling my hair out I'll be happy. We have a Little Giant 9200. I have installed a fan that i pilfered from an old computer and I aimed the fan upward. I then tested the whole contraption. After about a week of testing we felt confortable to set eggs. We purchased them from Ebay and they arrived in bubble wrap. Very well packaged. None broken. We kept them at about 60 degrees and rotated them for approx 4 days (had to get one last camping trip in before im married to an incubator) All told the eggs were about 7 days old when we started incubation. So far so good. Temp and humidity holding good even with all the opening and turning help I get. We havent even dropped any yet (touch wood). So whos with us
