I joined here because I was going to get some chickens. However, after much thought and lots of advice, I have decided that because of their dust problem (I have allergies), I would be better with ducks.
I am looking for hardy (I live in PA) and good egg layers that can also be good pets.
Would this breed, Welsh Harlequins, be best?

I have welsh harlequins in VT and they are very cold hardy. We were -7 a couple days ago and they were fine. They're also docile and make good, silly pets. Plus they lay a lot of eggs! Here's one of my girls napping this summer:

I'm in Vermont to abd have been considering ducks. I have a beaver pond about 100 yards from my house. Could that work as a water source for them? I'm sui exited to see that they are thriving with you. It's been so cold already this winter.

Natural and man made ponds are wonderful for ducks but before you put them on the water make sure all snapping turtles are gone, they wreck havoc on ducks biting off feet ,eating ducklings and maiming waterfowl.
