Just got chased by a fox!

The den and kits are a good 300-500 yards away, on my parents property, they've seen the mama and kits coming and going from the den. It's not that close, but not that far away either. Last night was the first time we saw any sign of fox in our yard though.

Yeah thats a stretch for it to be with that den. Hunting isnt but I doubt a fox would bother chasing your cat 300 yards LOL!

We had a young Coyote come into the carport and on into the garage one day. The wife walked into the garage and paid it no attention until she re-entered the house, then it hit her what she had just seen. If you yelled like she did i'm surprised we didnt hear it from here haha!

hey thats not a good thing at all. could you see if the fox eyes were crusty looking, was there any foamy druel? has your cat had a rabies shot? I hope your brother was correct that it was just mad, but i seriously would be concerned about rabies. behaviors are the first thing to change in an animal that has rabies. you can buy rabies vac from your local feed store, or online unless you live in a restrictive state.

I don't think I even yelled, stupidly, I was more worried about getting the cat inside. Once I came out he turned to try to stand his ground, I don't know if he thought we'd handle the fox together or if he was trying to protect me.

It must have been a sight for the neighbors though, me and my broom swinging at a fox! It was just dark enough they couldn't see what it was until it ran right by them.

The cat is up to date on his rabies, I make sure of that with a child around. I couldn't see the fox more than to know he was big and that it was indeed a fox. He looked a bit mangy, but other than that I didn't get a good look.

Since your a woman - I think a 12 gauge might be a little too much kick - get a 20 gauge and use hi brass with No. 4 shot - that should kill a fox that is around 20 yards away - yes a shotgun would be better for you since you don't have to be as accurate as you would have to be with a 22 - the fox did act unusually - they usually take off when they see a human - I don't know - I'd be careful for awhile since it could be sick - as I mentioned in another post without fur trappers around there isn't really many people keeping the predators in check and people are having more incounters with them -

My brother's a big hunter, maybe I'll talk him into letting me borrow one of his shot guns and give me a refresher course. I'm a large women and I've shot before, but it's always been for sport/target, never to kill. I would rather have someone else take the fox out cleanly so we can send it for testing, but I also want something on hand if I need to try myself.

Better get some traps set out and try to trap her. It will be fairly easy to trap a fox as they are not nearly as wiley as ol' man coyote. I would not suggest shooting at it with a shotgun unless you are well aware of your surroundings. A shotgun without the proper choke can tend to scatter wildly and you may do more damage to your own animals than the fox. I would shoot one in an instant with the .22 if you are fairly handy with a gun, if not though, I definitely recommend the trapping. Just do a google search or ask your game warden and they can probably direct you to someone who will come and trap them for you. Good luck, I know how nasty them little critters can be!!
