How funny...I am laughing with you and not at you. My Dh locked me in the hen house not to long ago. He didn't know I was in their gathering eggs and he thought the kids had just left the door unlocked and locked it. I was in there about 15 minutes when I went to the door to leave. It didn't move. I stood there wondering what to do (cell was in the human house) and peeked out the window and saw DH mowing the lawn. I waited until he had to empty the bag and started calling his name. He came over and let me out. He did ask what I was doing in the hen house and then laughed. We were laughing so hard the kids thought we had lost our minds.

Ha ha lol. I have those self locks also and got locked in. It wasn't fun. I'll vouch for the string idea. Had hubby fix that up that night. That is AFTER he finally stopped all his laughing.

My hubby isn't even home from work yet!! I reaaally don't want to tell him, but if I don't, the boys will!! When I finally got out and came in the house they were both like "Mom where were you" as I am standing there full of chicken poo!! I still can't get over it!! It really was funny!! Now that I have showered and I'm all nice and clean now. I had to push the chickens out of the way to get myself out the little door. They were all probably thinking "we knew she was crazy".

I had the exact same thing happen to me with probably the same latch. I too ran a wire from inside that I could pull on to release that latch. Before that, I was considering keeping a pair of wire cutters in the run for an emergency release; still might do that; you just never know. It could be fatal in the middle of winter if nobody were home and all of your/my neighbors' doors were closed, and they couldn't hear you/me.

EDIT: Hmmm, okay, in the morning the wire cutters are going in there to stay.
