Just Two Ducks

I own two ducks, 1 female and 1male. We wanted only two when we bought them and they didn’t know the sex as they were babies. They are just about six months old now. They really love each other. Should I be concerned of only having one female and one drake? Do you have any suggestions, comments, experiences, words of wisdom, etc....?

They are beautiful! Since your female is a bit larger I wouldn't be too concerned but once it's mating season keep a close eye on them. It would be better if you had two more females so your drake doesn't over mate her.

I agree, it definitely helps that your male is smaller than female. You will just have to wait an see how it goes. I had 1 saxony male and 2 pekin females. They didn't have any issues during the mating seasons. I got him more females before then assuming it wouldn't be. But the new females didn't go outside till mid to late summer. So it can work out just fine, it just depends on the male.

A friend of mine has two drakes and a duck hen, all Pekins.
I would NOT think that's a good combination, but they're all fine and happy.

I would be concerned about what would happen if one of them passes (sorry!). I think the other would be lonely. They are really beautiful ducks.

two works perfectly fine most of the time no matter the gender! if one passes (hopefully not) you can adopt another from a waterfowl rescue (and with two you can have any gender and it’ll work, two drakes or two hens or a pair!)
