I have a technique that has worked for me for years and wanted to hear others commentary.
I have found that hens do not like to simply fly over our 4 ft fence. They like to go under or fly and sit atop the fence and then jump down.
The only place that is solid is the double gate (two 3.5 ft wide x 4 ft sections).
A new chicken to the flock has been doing this so I recently strung a piece of tulle above the gate doors. She has since not escaped.

They like to perch. If there is nothing to perch on they don't fly up. I like the tulle but wonder how long it will last. I attach stiff wire so it stands up a foot or so.
