Keeping Cool Without A/C

Someday we will have central air. For now, we have a window AC unit in our bedroom, and a blanket stapled in the hallway so it cools off our room and our daughter's room. Thankfully, the bedrooms are small.

Just checked - it's 89 in the house right now.

We have the ceiling fans on. No lights on, seems to make it cooler with no light

Not this cat. I like hot weather but I can only take off so many articles of clothing before the cops get called. Even then all the hair on my back acts as an insulator.

I'm pretty frugal most the year but the reason I have a job is to pay for my huntin and fishin trips, and my creature comforts!

The difference is your heat won't last. If I turn off the AC, in three days my house will be over 100 and remain that way for the next 4 months. Our forecast for the next four months is 98* for daytime highs and 78* for nighttime lows. At 9 pm it is still 85*. I suspect you turn on your heat all winter, I turn on my ac all summer.

We pay in summer, you pay in winter.

I would die without a/c. I literally get physically sick when I go outside and it's about 75* outside. I want to move to Maine or Alaska but DH cannot take the cold. Dont we make a good pair?

Doesn't mean it's still a breeze when it's 95 for days on end

Of course, our winter propane bill is about $4000. I couldn't cut $600 a month for climate control ALL year round

It's 88 degrees in my house right now.

I wear tank tops, shorts and have a fan or two going. Fans in the windows at night to bring cooler night air in.
I do open and close certain windows to try let cooler night air in and keep warmer air out... but in this old farmhouse with little shade and a black roof... it honestly doesn't make much difference.
(In the winter the thermostat is set at 63 degrees and the furnance sometimes runs non-stop. )

The other thing that really helps me with the temps is that I go outside and pull weeds, take care of the chickens and dog and just soak up some rays. Stand in the sun on a 90+ degree day and then come in, take a shower and sit in front of a fan. It feels pretty good. Go all summer without A/C and you'll have a new found appreciation of a light breeze, a shade tree and a cool drink.
Being warm in the house actually makes it much easier to go outside and take care of the stuff outside.

I used to think I die without A/C... in reality, I very much like not running it. It hasn't affected my allergies or asthma, in fact, I feel better without it. I do need to wash clothes more often and use a bit more water.... but I'm saving hundreds of dollars by not using it.

What cracks me up about how some people set their thermostats is that they'll have them set real high in the winter but then turn them way down in the summer. Like 78 degrees is ideal in the winter but far too hot in the summer. That makes no sense at all.
