Keeping Cool Without A/C

This house is the first time I have ever had central AC and heat. I have found that as I get further into middle age the heat gets to me more! Bleh, makes me feel woozy. The good thing is that the house is heavily shaded in the summer, so AC is cheap. The bad thing is that we live in a humid jungle!

I lived in and around Austin, TX for over 20 years, no AC at all. Windows were always open in warm weather, fans blowing in one set of windows, out in the set of windows at the other end of the house. Whoever got home first was in charge of hosing/spraying the roof down with water, it really did help cool the house down! We did finally put in a "whole house fan", it was wonderful at night.

I have a stock of cheap washcloths. I wet them down and fold them into a ziplock baggie and throw them in the freezer.

Take one out when you need it. They stay cold for a very long time out of the freezer and replenished easily.

I take a fresh frozen one out and put it under my hat when I am out in the sun for very long.

Actually, that is one of the best parts about the AC... it takes humidity out of the air. Ran just a tiny window unit at the apartment for maybe 8 hours on the weekend it was warm, and it pulled out over a half gallon water from our little concrete box. The drip tube drains into a milk jug to help water plants on the balcony.

It's 92 in the shade here today...Yuck! I don't have my ac even in the window.I actually have 3 units but haven't used them for 2 years...might have to wipe that chicken dust off 'em and put one in the bedroom tonight...it's pretty rare for it to get this hot here for any length of time so I try not to use them because I hate having it in the way of the window view.(and I'm not fond of the light bill when we use them either!)

Twenty years. I was young and skinny back then! Also lived without running water for 2 years. Sort of..... you had to run out front, turn the water on, run back in and get ready for work, run back out and turn the water off.... all so I could be at work at 5 or 6 a.m. So yep, we had running water!
