Keeping the neighbor's chickens out of my yard

If my neighbors cats were unwelcome, then told me that it was my problem?? Damn straight I’d dispose of a cat.

Believe me, I would too, and have. All I'm saying is, there have been lots of threads on this website about saving the cats. It comes to this thread and most people are saying to chicken nap or kill. When there are proper and better avenues for OP to take

I get it. But sometimes calling law enforcement creates a whole new tit for tat. I like the neighbors working with neighbor approach. When neighbor doesn’t want to take care of his stuff and openly says it’s my issue. Then that critter becomes mine to do with as I see fit.

I have dealt with dogs chasing stock. Goats in my garden (neighbor thanked me for letting them work out how to keep the dang things in their field) Neighbors rooster deciding He wanted to come 1/4 mile to set upon my rooster in my field (thought it was rather comical, drank a few beers and helped string chicken wire along his fence so the group didn’t walk through the field fence any more.

It’s all about reasonable people. When your not reasonable then the problem gets fixed expeditiously. (I’m very unreasonable with dogs in messing with my animals.... they get hung on the fence for a few days waiting for the owner to claim the carcass. Then go to the dump)

Yes, one could call enforcement. However, maybe you have been lucky enough to never have bad neighbors....like ones who retaliate. If enformcent officer comes over and the OP has been the only one to complain to neighbor, then neighbor would assume OP is the one that got enformcent on them. IF the neighbor is the retaliatory type, then I'll bet OP would regret not taking another route. I would not suggest OP kills the chickens. I doubt OP wants a chicken dinner that badly - pretty sure OP just doesn't want chickens in the yard. OP needs to decide what to do based on OP's experience and interactions with neighbor. Some people are just clueless and out of sight=out of mind, and no hard feelings. In that case, call enforcement bc that kind of neighbor would likely say "OH! I'm sorry!! Had NO idea, I'll work on containment" etc. and then it eventually gets resolved one way or another. But, that kind of neighbor seems to be the rare kind. If OP lives in relatively close proximity to neighbor, then another reason to not give neighbor cause to retaliate. However, enforcement is one avenue. If a cat or dog was in your yard....pooping, or scaring your animals, etc. You would want it gone. If you knew whose dog it was, you would try to work with them. If the problem persisted, what would you do? Well, you might call animal control, you might trap and take to the shelter. And, I'll bet that your decision would be based upon your dealings with the dog/cat owner.

I'm not saying to call law enforcement. I'm saying to call the city. They have tried for years to work it out with the neighbor. Neighbor is violating city ordinances and deserves to get the chickens taken away and fined.
It’s an enforcer of law. Not necessarily the boys in blue, but still an official that has authority to enforce punstive damages.

Yes. I witnessed it myself. Teenagers. Had plenty of time to slow down and let the hen cross the road. They sped up and crushed her. Yes, folks, those are the kids we are leaving our world to.
I...I am so disappointed with my generation. Did you at least get to yell at them or did they just drive away?

I have advice that may not be nice but is effective. catch one of his/her chicken and raise it and keep it hostile until they agree to what you want. it’s simple. you want them to follow the rules and not have their chickens on your property causing harm to YOUR disabled dog. as long the chickens aren’t hurt it should be fine. if they don’t comply, rehome them to someone who can properly take care of them.
That is theft

Soooo....my hubby is an inspector for the health dept. He got a complaint last year from a guy that his neighbor was keeping an ungodly amount of chickens on his property. The neighbor claimed that the chickens were not penned and there was a massive amount of poop everywhere which was drawing in hordes of flies. My husband was required to investigate....and found out that the neighbor was absolutely correct. The person was given a citation and a specified amount of time to clean it up and pen the chickens in or they would all be confiscated. I'm not sure if he had to go back or not....I didn't ask him and he hasn't mentioned it again.

But....probably the biggest and only funny part about this entire story? The individual who owned these chickens was......wait for it.....yes! The manager of a KFC. 😂 I swear to God that is a true story.... Needless to say, that KFC has also been written up so many times with so many health code violations that my husband tells anyone and everyone DO NOT eat there.

The key take away here is that the OP can also call the Health Dept and complain.
