I'm pretty close

- in Jeffersonville - just an exit or two from you. My husband and I are also new to chickens. Our flock is eight weeks old, and 21 birds strong. We have 2 Rhode Island reds and they are sweet. Also very curious and brave, exploring new space or foods before many of the others are willing to.

Yep, they are definitely curious. And opinionated. Mine are a year old and I'm not sure how much they were handled up til now, but they don't seem to like it when I invade their space :).

We wanted day olds for that reason. The reds and a few of the others like to perch on a knee or forearm if my husband or I sit down in the coop or run. They let me stroke their backs and chest.

Rhode Island Reds are great birds. Good temperament and lay lots of large brown eggs

Yeah, they seem to have a pretty good temperament for the most part. Apparently, my birds are working in shifts. I have one that lays in the morning, one lays in the afternoon, and one in the evening.

I knew it would be a trade-off when I chose adult hens. I just really don't have a good place to set up a brooder right now. And I'm a little bit impatient. Plus, if you buy chicks from Rural King or Tractor Supply, you have to buy at least 6, and that's more than I need or have room for here in town. In a few years, I'm planning to sell this house and relocate to a place with some land, so I think at that time, I'll get a new batch of baby chicks, since my current hens will be 3+ years old by then.

FYI- There is an exotic animal sale this Wednesday thru Saturday May 3rd, 4th, 5th & 6th At Triple W ranch in Cookeville,TN. Friday they have the bird sale where you can find an amazing number of peafowl, ornamental pheasants, common and rare domestic breeds of chickens and ducks, many breeds of geese, Turkeys, doves and always the unexpected. Other days are unusual livestock like watusi cattle, camels, zebras, American Bison, ostriches and a large number of other species. Thought I would mention it in case someone was looking for something hard to find.

I was on the fence, because I really didn't want to wait 5 months for eggs. We're still months away... but I can pet my chicken, lol. Sounds kindof silly when I say it that way.

Haha, same. I wanted to make sure they were friendly. Sometimes they are almost too friendly. They won't even move out of the way and they will attempt to perch anywhere on our body!

Too funny - mine do the same. They want in my lap, they like when I look them in the eye and talk to them. And it isn't just for treats, because I go in and sit sometimes and bring nothing.

Honestly, I do value the semi-reciprocal relationship a lot.

Good morning is there anyone that raises guineas that would be interested in taking two for me. A family moved out and abandoned them back in Nov and their neighbors came knocking on my door asking if I could catch them. They are beautiful birds and have grown well over the winter but I think they would be happier with more of there own kind instead of my chickens. I don't know how old they are and I believe they are a male and female. If interested pm me.

So, a few more weeks into it, and I'm pleased to say that my RIR hens are coming around. They will let me pick them up and hold them now. Well, 2 of them will, anyway. The 3rd one simply does not like me and wants nothing to do with me, lol.
