Ok, I am here, finally - hubby had the computer most of the day.
I have two babies, so far. No others have pipped, but tomorrow is day 21, so I'm not worried.
The first baby had been pipped for 24 hours, with not much advancement (zipped maybe a half inch), so I checked it out, and it had part of the membrane stuck so that it's wing was stuck to its head!! poor baby
, so I unstuck the wing and it came out ok. The second one pipped and hatched within about 6 hours or so. I upped the humidity to 70% and that helped the second one, I think. The first baby would have gotten out if it could have turned in the shell, but it was stuck tight.
They are the prettiest color of buff - sort of a silky looking golden color. They shine in the flashlight glow
Hubby was complaining about the smell tonight - I don't blame him, I'm having to clean brooders every day. I think I may go to town tomorrow and grab another waterer and another lamp (how many dang lamps have I got so far? 8?) so I can seperate the first chicks. I'm gonna put the cochins into a cage, and the other four into a cage, so it'll be easier to clean them up.
I'll probably put BC and the Jap baby into the playpen for a change - let them stretch out a bit for awhile. BC's head hits the top of that little cage when she stands up
But, Jon is off tomorrow, so I can work on that.
Oh, and those dang donkeys got into the coop again!!! They ate a full feeder of chicken feed, and almost trashed the waterer.
I was so mad, I told hubby either he fixes the problem, or I will. He doesn't want me using his tools without his watching
, so I said I wanted a fence built, 8 foot out from the coop doors, all the way down and coming back to the coop at the bottom - he can put a gate into the side of it to enter the pasture. He said ok - so next nice day we get, I'm getting a fence WOOHOO!!!!
Also, having it come out 8 foot, I can always put chicken wire on the fence and let the other chickens out into that little "pasture" on nice days. It'll be an 8x24 area.
I told Sam that Somerset had a half inch or so of slush (heard on the radio), and he was bummed, cause we got practically nothing here - just had some rain then some snow - not real snow, just flurries. So he has school tomorrow
Well, gonna catch up o all I've missed today....
