Kentucky people

Well, I think I know which one it is, it was wiggling, but I still have no external pips, so I'll let it go til after dinner.

I have two posts up for the fence - we decided that was more important than going to Sano, so maybe next week we'll go to Sano. I can probably have the fence done by tomorrow evening, if it isn't too icky out.

The donkeys have made the coop their all day hangout now, so we have to do something right away, they are chewing on the dang wood on the door.

Fat spoiled critters act like we starve them.

Bruce was finally convinced when he was standing down there, looking at it for future wood purchases, and Mama walked around him, around the barrier (which was flat on the ground) and walked right into the coop. Shoved Bruce right out of the way to get inside.

and he didn't believe me when I said they wouldn't listen when I said "get out". See what I mean by spoiled donkeys? They know we won't hit them, or harm them, so they walk wherever they want. Yelling doesn't work. Shoving them along works, temporarily - as soon as you're gone, they go right back.

Well, I've been wanting a fence there since he built the coop - but he didn't think we needed one - I guess there is more than one way to get my fence. Too bad they couldn't have started this stuff when it was NICER out, though

. It's more fun to work when it is about 70 degrees than when it is 35 degrees.

Well, at least the ground is soft so digging post holes goes really fast

Sorry to hear that the donkeys are creating such a nuisance, I wonder though, can you beat an ass's ass?

Anyway the fur kids are snoozing at the moment, the chicks are doing their thing, zipping around and sampling the food and running over to get a sip of water. I swear, some of them must be football players in disquise, the way they just run over each other!

No I didn't see the coop design you mentioned, but you could always split your pens between the two buildings and have the other's on the outside, might cut down on the friction between the roos if they aren't all in one coop challenging each other.

Just a thought.

well, actually, Donkeys are very sensistive, and they do not forget such things lightly. Where a dog will forgive you, and a horse probably would forget in awhile, a donkey will not. They get their feelings hurt and will pout for a long time, then plot their revenge
gig.gif

I never knew much about Donkey's til I got some, and read the book on them (and talked to Jr. Walker, the resident donkey expert.)

They are so much different than horses, even, I was surprised.
We had horses growing up, I've had lots of horses of my own, but never had a donkey, nor knew anyone who had them (they aren't that popular up north).

I love the donkey's dearly, they just make me so angry I could kill them sometimes - sort of like my children

Speaking of which - I hope it is nice out next saturday/sunday because I have to drive to E-town to pick Adam up at the bus station - at 7:40 eastern time!! which means 6:40 our time. I'm gonna have to drive early in the morning

I'm gonna have to leave here at 4:40 to get there. That simply blows, but I'll be happy to see him (and probably happy to take him back in January

Heck, we'll be back here before anyone even gets out of bed

btw - still no more action on those eggs - I'm afraid no more are gonna hatch.

That sucks.

I'm tempted not to order anymore eggs through the mail - or maybe it is me. I am thinking it is something I did wrong, since they all developed to "ready to hatch" and haven't.

I am hoping with all the cochins I'll have around here next summer, that I can get some broodies out of the bunch - so much easier than ME trying to hatch them.

I am considering just ordering some delawares and white rocks from Day & Day next spring - so I don't have to bother with shipped eggs.
I can order just pullets, that way. Will cost more, but once I have some broodies, I ought to not have to buy anymore chicks.

Hmmm, mt healthy doesn't carry delawares, looks like I'll be ordering those form somewhere else.

hmmmm, if I order what I want from this one place (purely poultry) it'll cost me 67 bucks to get them all - simply because I have a 25 chick min order.

I don't need that many chicks, though.

I suppose I have a white rock, and can get more at Day & Day in the spring. I have two buff orp babies - hopefully both will be hens, if not, I can order form mypetchicken and get delawares and buff orps from there.

if I order 5 of each from Cackle, I can get them for about 47 bucks (unless they have a box charge or something). That would be better, since I don't need that many of them.
that would be for the delaware, white rock and buff orp - all pullets, 5 of each.

Hmmm......

If you did order the 25 minimum this spring, you could always keep them a little while and take them to Sano and sell them. If they're all pullets, they'd do pretty good.

Speaking of Sano

We went tonight. There was sooooooo much stuff there!! Dad almost bought me a pair of millies, they went for $7 each, he stopped at $5. There was a female gray call duck there...$7!! I wanted her, but there was just the one, and my drakes would have probably killed it. There were BLRW there......$5!!!!!!! Each bird!!!!!! Can you BELIEVE it???? OMG, I was soooo wanting those!! I have no place to put them right now, and Ms. Lewis Rich is hopefully gonna let me get some BLRW bantam eggs from her this spring

I really don't want to get standard birds. I'm about to cook one of dad's roos that's running around the yard. It's the BR or Dom, not sure which. That stupid thing was riding Nugget today! This rooster is at least 5 x's bigger than her! I tell ya, if I could have caught him, he would be soup! My hen Emma, the little red one, won't even hardly eat, cause every time she comes near the food one of those stupid roosters is chasing her. She's bigger than Nugget, but they're still at least 4 x's her size. And my poor splash hen stays in the rafters all day long. Same reason. And what the $@#! does he need all these roosters for???? NOTHING!!! That's what really ticks me off. They just run around the yard, terrorizing my hens and eating my feed. I think next time I go to the sale, I'm gonna take me some roosters with. I bought the darn things, and I'm the one that feeds them! He 'borrowed' the money from me this summer to buy those chicks, and never payed me back. Just like all those standard chicks in that tractor. Either they were given to 'me', or I hatched them, I feed them, but they're his?? I'm gonna stop feeding them, and see how long it takes him to figure it out. There are 16 in that tractor, plus 10 in the yard, and 45 in the coop run. What does he need all these birds for???? To drive me crazy evidently!!

sorry I didn't go.

btw - almost hate to ask after that venting
gig.gif
but does your dad have any other white rocks he can spare? I don't know how many hens he had of the white rocks, but if he can let another one go (or two) I'd be happy to take them.

I would have enough of the rocks, then, and not have to get any next spring. I am trying to find ways to get the chickens I want without having to pay a ton of money to have them shipped, or have them not hatch properly.

also btw - I doubt the other eggs will hatch, none have any movement or anything. I checked my troubleshooting guide, and I think what happened is they got too cold in transit. Having them shipped this time of year would do that. I checked "fully developed but not pipped" - and that was one of the possible problems - the other problems I had covered (humidity, temp, etc..) That was the one that is most reasonable. Too bad, because nearly all of the eggs were viable, if they had not gotten so cold in the postal truck.

I have two babies, I am glad of that at least. They are so pretty, too.

I really want the white rocks and the delaware hens, so that is my main goal for the meaty flock. The buff orps are nice, too, but I can live without those. The problem will be finding someone local who has delaware hens for sale. I could post on Craigslist, and on here, I suppose. White rocks, if nothing else, I can get chicks in the spring from Day & Day.

hmm... gonna go post on BYC , see if I get any hits.

I think he still has 3, might be 2. He said before that he would get rid of 10 of his already-layers, so that leaves 7. Plus he has all those pullets running in the yard (at least 6) that he needs to pen up. You don't want any big stupid roosters do ya?

I do not need big stoopid roosters - have had way too many of those
lau.gif

I will take two more white rocks, though if he is willing to get rid of a couple more. I can come after them next week sometime. Gonna be busy this weekend getting that fence done
big_smile.png

I can't wait to see those furry little donkey faces when they can't even get close to the coop
lau.gif

So far since the first oxine of the banty coop - no one else is sick, and those what had a sniffle or two are fine and dandy. I still need to get out there and dose it again - been busy this week.

I did, however, notice that they had gotten into the bag of DE and spread a load of it on the floor, and were into that - could too much DE be harming them? I know it is a respiratory irritant. I'm sure it could at least irritate the sinuses so that other bugs could take hold easier. I guess I need more trash cans out there to hold stuff - would never have thought they'd have gotten into the bag of DE.

I'll get with ya on a day to come get those hens
big_smile.png
Probably early it he week, as later in the week I'll be busy getting ready for MORE company

even if it is just my kid.

Sheesh, is it actually almost Christmas??? Where did the time go?

meri

Chickens are either very curious, or very dumb. My vote is for very dumb. I have caught I don't know how many of them eating styrofoam, with a feeder full of food, and corn tossed on the ground. So them getting into the DE does not surprise me. I have no idea what effect it would have on them, as I have yet to use any myself.

Poor donkeys!! You are so mean! They just want some of the good stuff you keep giving those birds
wink.png
I'm sure they'll try their darnedest to get in there after the fence is built. Make sure it's good and strong. If they're anything like dad's stupid horse, they'll be able to break anything that's not completely solid. I've finally gotten him to stop putting them in the pasture where the pond is. There is no grass there anyway, and they have figured out how to get into the part where the ducks feed is. Stupid Friday ate every danged bit of it one day, just as soon as I put it in there and walked away. Then he proceeded to try and stomp me when I tried to get him out of there!! Can anyone say 'dog food'?

It is a wonder how the days seem to move along faster the closer Christmas gets. I can't believe it's less than two weeks away!!
