Oh nooo.... Sorry Mojo it seems that I have set you off again.

Did you see the post by the Chineese guy who is a capon trained person? The guy uses his bare feet to hold down the chick and then cuts the chick sticks in tweasers pulls out the testes and it appears to sew a stich then toss the bird away all in about 5 seconds.

Had I tried it without seeing that vidieo and just following the instructions from my capon kit then it would have been a major operation taking about 3 minutes of carefully tormenting the bird into exhaustion. Unintentionally of course, but still I would have tried to make everything just so and the poor bird would have been paniced the whole time. The way he was doing it, he was finished before the bird knew what was happening.

If you haven't seen the vidio let me know an I will go looking for it.

I use to work with a guy who's wife is a Phillippino nurse. She use to make money to put herself through nursing school by sewing up wounded cocks at cock fights. (in the Phillippines) A lot of people really liked her and paid good bucks to get their chickens cared for by her. Chicken surgery.

Hum... perhaps I should deleat that last paragraph. I can see it now... woman arrested at cock fight treating wounded birds.

yeah, I've seen the video - not sure I'd ever get that fast (or be able to work my body into that position to hold them still with my toes
gig.gif
)

It's worth looking into, though - and yeah, I agree, I'd probably take at least a full minute, even after I got good at it.

I'm just into the whole "do whatever I can for myself as cheaply as possible" thing. If I can utilize the extra hatched roos I get here, then I may as well make it worthwhile and have em a bit more tender and easy to deal with. You can only sell just so many extra roos at the auction, ya know what I mean?

There may come a time when skills like caponizing are in high demand, too - if the economy keeps tanking like it is.

btw - Toby and Lily got treats today - Benny and Joon (the geese) were trying to go AWOL again - they were only up by the milk barn, though, and the dogs went up barking and herded them back down to the house. All without ever getting within 10 feet of them (which is good, cause the last time they "played with" my waterfowl, they killed two ducks). (in case you're wondering, they got leftover meatloaf and a chewy bone each -

)

I'm hoping to reinforce the "herding" behavior and lessen the "Oh boy! Feathery Chewtoys!!" reaction.

Now, if I could get hubby to hold the chick still, it would speed things up a lot - less time tying it and weighting it down, and less chance of the string slipping and me gouging myself or the bird with the scalpel.

He thinks I'm a bit "overboard" too, sometimes - but he never complains at Dinnertime

Well, I was not gonna go to Sano, cause it is raining and I won't have my truck back til next week, now - but then I saw I had three pips in the hatcher, and no place to put new chicks...

I sold 57 chicks (all that I took) to one guy - got less than I asked, but still more than I have into them.

I'm still pretty full with chicks, here, but I have room to put the newly hatched ones, now, at least.

The guy who got them had bantam barred rock eggs - I almost bought a dozen (hubby stopped me
lau.gif
) because I know someone who was wanting some, so I figured I could hatch 'em and sell to him .... maybe next time
wink.png

I suppose I really should wait to put more eggs in until I have room to put chicks.
I just love newly hatched babies
big_smile.png

Now, IF I had my truck so I could get materials , and IF I had my truck so I could take more poultry to the auction - I'd have plenty of room for more chicks!!! It's the fix-it shops' fault!! dang them anyway!
wink.png

The guy said he always has BBR hatching eggs (he doesn't sell his adults, and his bators are full, he said) so next time I see him out there maybe I'll have room to put some bantam babies.

But I got rid of all I took and came home empty handed, so I did good

Now I have to just clean the newbie brooder so I can put newbies into it.

Oh, btw, I was talking to Eli, and he said he doesn't know anyone at all who caponizes. He seemed interested, though, so maybe we can figure it out and corner the market in our area

Ya know, I hate to say it, but he is one of the only Amish folks around here I bother to chat with. He's a nice guy, honest, not out to rip you off -- a lot of the Amish around here figure if you aren't one of their sect, they can steal ya blind (by selling you inferior/sick/inbred/etc... livestock.)

The Amish up where I moved from had a lot more integrity than the ones I've run into down here.

Maybe cause they knew I was a Stambaugh --- up there, in the Amish/Mennonite/Brethren communities everyone knows your family tree.

Oh well....

sorry I was wet and cold (and bummed hubby wouldn't let me buy them) and I just wanted to go home. I think you were busy. He'll be out there next week, too, I'm sure. He wanted 10 bucks a dozen for them. He's the guy in the orange jacket who got my chicks.

Yeah, but geez Meri! I keep my eyes open for you

He was the old grizzly Adams looking one, right? I didn't realize anyone in this area had them. Now I guess I'll have to decide on something else. But the bantam barred rocks sure are pretty!

I'm sorry, I had totally forgotten that you wanted them - I thought you had said something about giving up on those, cause ya had so many other breeds.

You may flog me later.
gotta run - everyone is whining cause they want Pizza (yuk!)

be back in a few

I really need to find out about what time the Paris swap meet happens. I am clueless. These swap meets sound fun.

Hey Mojo, if I shaved off my mustash do you think I could pass as an Amish? I have a full beard.

I think I need to get out of the house and do something. I think I'll go see a movie. I hate going anywhere by my self but the chicks around here just don't do much for me intelectually. They are warm, fuzzy and fun but that is about it.

I got my backyard Poultry Mag today in the mail. I need to read that as well.
