My bantam Brahmas were chipmunky with feathered feet.

In other news, I really need to have a cull/processing party to get rid of a bunch of roos. I think eleven Barred rock roos out of 13 eggs. Does anyone know if that sexing of eggs thing is true? If it is I got gyped.

You know, I have wondered that myself. It's true that I haven't had very good hatches this winter, but I have had a few that had 1 chick hatch out of each batch. So now, I'm the proud owner of 1 golden lakenvelder roo, 1 black ameraucana that I'm pretty sure is a roo, 1 silver phoenix that looks like a roo, and 1 buttercup roo. My millie hatch was a bit better, I got 3 roos and 3 pullets from that. But it has gotten me wondering if the people are just sending their 'roo' eggs to get rid of them

Either that, or 'roo' eggs are just tougher!

Mojo Chick'n :

The banties at the feedstore could be about anything - Mt. Healthy doesn't advertise Columbian Rocks, either, but that's what they sent them last time. So just cause it ain't on the website, doesn't mean Mt. Healthy doesn't have it, I guess.

I went round and round with Mt. Healthy last summer about a couple of chicks I bought that I knew came from them. Kept emailing back for more information until I finally got this answer:

"We are not sure of the exact breeds, we buy the eggs and do have our own flocks on the bantams, when the eggs come in the breeds are all mixed and we are not told which ones are in there."

I think she meant we do NOT have our own flocks...., but whatever, its hard telling what breeds you could get from them.

Well, I just sold four swedish ducks woohoo!!
Fewer that I have to catch and haul out to Sano. Guy drove all the way from Horse Cave for them
big_smile.png

He had emailed, but not saying when he'd be here, so I was surprised, luckily I was home
lau.gif

I hope they ride home ok, we put them into a box in his CORVETTE!!!!

Luckily it's a box and not a cage - at least most of the poo will be contained
gig.gif
.

I should be cleaning the hatching room - but I just don't feel like it (it's half done
tongue.png
).

Oh, I'm taking the jumbo quail to the auction friday, too - they aren't laying and I am just feeding them (and they throw out a LOT of food when they eat.) I'll just let Shelley corner that market
lau.gif
and stick to chickens.

I'm not looking forward to trying to stuff the geese into a cage. If that broody hen on eggs hasn't hatched by tomorrow (and it doesn't look like she will) they may have to wait another week to go to auction. I have them penned up for now, to keep my chickens safe.

Are you giving them any type of calcium? I have noticed that mine lay better when they have calcium available. They also need the higher protein food, don't know what you are feeding yours. It could also be their lighting. If they are still inside the coop, they might not be getting enough light to 'trigger' them into laying.

the 16% with soymeal added - but most of it ends up on the floor under their cage

any idea what I should sell them for?

I just have so many different poultry right now - no time to really mess with the quail - maybe another year I'll try them again.

I just took another 50 chicks out to the coop - sort of early, they aren't that old, but the brooder coop holds steady at about 80 degrees so I figure they'll be fine.

lau.gif
that puts me down to about 40 chicks inside still - until a week or two then I'll be adding in 40 more.

Not sure, a friend of mine told me that they were selling for $2-$2.50 each week before last. They aren't bringing much, that's for sure. I'd buy them back, but I don't have any cash right now
hit.gif
Unless you could wait a couple of weeks for the money???
wink.png
You should put a pan or something underneath their cage to catch what they spill. I don't have that problem, whatever they drop gets eaten by the chickens. Plus, they should have at the very least 20% protein, but the 24% is better
smile.png
Let me know if we can make a deal....I have a couple of 'layer' type chicks in the house I could swap you
big_smile.png

Unless you could let me slide for a few weeks?

I could hang onto them for ya, if ya want to wait to buy them. They aren't a problem really, just the food throwing thing
lau.gif

I have been giving them the leftover from the higher protein stuff, too - I feed them the 16% in the morning, then when they eat/throw out that I put in some fo the bigger chunk higher protein stuff in tyhe afternoon. It takes them longer to throw that out, but I don't know how much of it they actually eat, it is pellets and corn and grains - seems sort of big for them to be eating. I ran out of that this morning, though (gave some to the ducks for scratchies).

I have a bag of flock raiser I could try for them - but that is expensive stuff to be throwing away
lau.gif

My main concern with them, I guess is the waste - I have way too many chickens to feed to be throwing out food on the floor.

I had thought about just putting them in with the ducks in that pen
lau.gif
but figured they'd fly out of there. I have 6 foot walls on most sides, but the upper part of the pen is lattice - not wire, and it is only about 3.5 foot tall - keeps the ducks in fine, but the quail it wouldn't stop for a minute. They'd squeeze right through the lattice.

I have some eggs in the hatcher right now, and a few in the bator (not many). If those hatch I'll be selling them, too.

eta - since I'm a hatching fool lately, what eggs do ya got to swap? Maybe a couple of cayuga, rouen or pekin eggs?

You remember that bowl that you sent those button and call eggs home with me in? It was a butter bowl that was cut in half? I have turned it into a feeder for the tuxedos, and they don't waste any food. I took a lid for a butter bowl and cut some holes in it, then put it on top of the bowl and 'fastened' it with rubber bands. The top is flat, and I think that is what keeps them from wasting it. Might be an option, but they really do need the higher protein stuff. The reason they aren't laying is probably because of the lower protein. I get 2-3 eggs a day from mine, since I lost that one. Most days it is 2, one of the girls is kind of lazy. But they only get the 20% right now, I'll be getting them the 24% when I have the money to buy another feed barrel!

If I end up with them here for much longer I'll try something like that - I think I would rather just simplify, though
big_smile.png

eta I did lose one hen the other day - not sure if it was the wet rainy weather and she got chilled, or missed out on food between fillings or what. The rest are doing ok, though other than not laying.

Tell ya what, how about two or three duck eggs for them all?

If ya had more buttons I'd swap ya some of those for them - I love the buttons
lau.gif

Duck eggs? That's it? I have those chicks, 2 golden comet pullets, one columbian rock, and one amberlink. Sure you don't want those?

I have 2 RIR too, but I know you don't like them. Me either, but Cris picked the chicks. That's okay, I can always sell them. Might take them to Sano this week, if I can go. I have 2 papers due Sunday that I have barely started on. Both of them are 1700+ words....can you say oops?
