Our gosling order came in earlier than we originally thought. So Flowerpot and I are driving down to pick up her goslings and finally meet everybody. We were originally going to come down on a Friday so we could go see what Sano was all about, however I can't make it this Friday so we are coming down on Tuesday instead. We are planning on getting together around 12:00 -12:30 central time for lunch at the Chinese Restaurant there, and then go out to Shelley's afterwards to get the goslings. Anybody that wants to join us is welcome to come and meet and greet.

Shelley knows someone with call ducks and she didn't share it with me? yeah, I see, now, how she is.

The Amish Auction was sort of a bust, we left early. I didn't see any poultry I needed - they had some african geese, a pair of chinese, a trio of toulouse, some young pekin ducks, they had a trio of white silkies, some laced chickens (blue laced, silverlaced, blred, etc.. pretty birds, but nothing I needed. They did have a box of three brahma hens, but I just got 26 chicks, so don't need those. Had a lot of bunnies, and some chicks - most looked like white rocks. They had some banty chicks, and a box or three of other chicks - a lot of barred rock chicks, but I didn't want to stick around for the auction on those - mostof the chicks were going for about 1.50 each (however many is in a box, you pay that for each chick x the total of chicks). Not a bad price, but I don't need chicks that bad - been getting them for practically free, lately.

The other stuff was sort of junky - and I didn't see any big livestock at all. I was mainly looking for some feeder pigs and a few calves. And call duck babies, of course,

always looking for those.

Well, Sam's prom is tonight, so I have to get some work done before I drag his butt into town for that. I'll get pics of him in his tux

- he is cute in the tux. He wanted a Zoot Suit, but they don't offer those anymore where he got his tux. So he got a black long tail tuxedo.
He says he's gonna wear his hat with it

I hope not. He loves that hat

Just curious to see if anyone else is experiencing more bees and wasps than usual this spring. I don't remember bees or wasps being a problem in previous years, but this year we had wasps appear everytime we went for a couple of days with warm weather (and then they'd freeze when temps would drop!) And now, with this new warm weather we're having, the bees have come out in force!

I am dodging bees left and right around my chicken coop and other select areas around my property in Shelbyville. Nowhere that there are flowers in abundance or any visible nests. I'm not sure where they're coming from!

Is anyone else finding more bees and wasps this year than normal?

tazzy, they have overwintered in a semiwarm, dry spot, either in a nearby tree or in the walls or attics of your buildings. You can try to locate them and see where they head after they have collected the pollen to make honey. If your lawn is largely clover(which bees love!) then they are attracted to the flower heads of the clover. There is a thread on one of the forums that shows where someone was renovating their house and discovered a huge hive in the ceiling rafters. They found a huge honeycomb just loaded with honey! They even posted pics of it.

And with all the warm weather and the plants are beginning to put out the flower heads, they will be out in droves to make up for the winter weather and restock their hives.

If you hear a droning noise coming from the walls of the building you may have to call a bee person to come and remove the hive for you.

We have tons of wasps and carpenter bees (the HUGE ones that look like Bumbles, but are not nice (like bumbles are) and are more bald/shiney on the back end.

Makes it hard to work outside, or just sit on the porch and enjoy the sunshine.

Haven't seen many honey bees yet, a few, but mostly the wasps and carpenter bees.

I drove to Frankfort today and got off to a late start since I went to donate blood. Got there about noon and couldn't find anything about chickens anywhere in the park. The park was full of young parents with knee knockers and belly bouncers. Kid's sports all over 40 odd acres.

I haven't noticed any excess of bees. A few extra large bumble bees but I thought it was because of the warm weather. I did notice on the way to Frankfort that there seemed to be an excess of bag worms in the trees.

Well I still have about 8 Barred Rock Roos that I need to get rid of some how. Some neighbor kids came down and wanted one after I got back and their parents came down and bought one. I told them when they got tired of it to bring it back. Perhaps they will feed it until it is big enough to process. I'll give them their money back. A maybe win-win. we'll see.

oh yes, that's what they are, carpenter bees! My dad was visiting on Thursday and he said that they are the kind that burrow into wood. And wasps.

the carpenter bees are everywhere and just keep hovering and swooping and diving and making me a tad nervous to be outside.

Hi!

Just wanted to drop by and say hi. I'm a newly registered member, but had looked a while before joining. My coop is not done yet, but when it is, I'm hoping to get some delawares.
