What's in Lebanon tomorrow?

I got a flyer from Day&Day yesterday about a consignment auction in Casey county next weekend. Anyone going to this one? I can post the info if ya want. Probably won't take any of my chickens though. It said you need to sell cages with the birds...I don't have any spare cages!!

Oh well, I might go and look anyway.

Cindy---How big do the austrolorps get? I have 3 young chickens that I think might be, but I have had them for a month or more, and they haven't gotten much bigger. They are bigger, but they aren't growing as fast as my dad's other large breed birds did.

Meri---You could always use your crock pot as a bator too. Then you could get even MORE eggs!

My son was outside trying to catch the silkie babies this morning, after I let them out of their tractor. Now one of my BTW japs is gone!!! I don't know if it ran too far away and can't find it's way back, or if it got out into the open and something got it, but I can't find it anywhere. And I think it was my remaining pullet...
hit.gif
I had one roo for sure, and one that looked like a roo before, but now I'm not so sure, and one pullet. I hope I still have a pair!

It was so cute last night. My hen Gertie has pretty much quit with her chicks. I had put plastic over the tractor night before last, cause the babies are still going in the nest. So I put plastic over it and stuck a light in there. When I let them out yesterday, I didn't pull the plastic up completely, just enough for them to get out more or less. I guess they were scared, cause most of them wouldn't go back in the tractor.
I went out there to check them, and there were only about 5 or 6 chicks in the nest, out of 13. I looked everywhere, and only found 2 more. I was so freaked out, until I looked inside the other end of the tractor, where my blue splash hen's nest is. She looked like she had about 25 chicks in there!!! I guess the majority of the chicks saw her's going in there and thought it would be a good place to hang out. it was so cute. I went out during the night to check on them, and the mama had 'kicked' one of them out of the nest, and it was sleeping on the ground. But it seemed warm enough, with the light and all.

My silly game hen is setting, and I have taken 5 eggs out from away from her, that had rolled or been pushed out of the nest. I brought them in, and put them in the bator, but they were pretty cold. I don't know how good they will do. All 5 were fertile too! :(Ok my book is done now (

Yeah, we can do this. Hubby is saying we don't have room (in the freezer) for more than 20 or so - but it won't be processing time til late May or early June - so I'll have room by then.

I have room to raise more than that, definately, so yeah, I'll get with ya when I do the order in the spring.

Peace -
Meri

Hey guys, I plan on hatching a bunch of eggs out of my dad's chickens once my bator is cleaned out...You could buy the chicks from me!!! They would be mixed breeds, RIR, SLW, and some kind of big white chicken that has feathers on its legs. I made the mistake of calling it a leghorn one day, dad about had a fit. "I don't have any leghorns in there!" He growled at me. So they aren't leghorns, but they are huge!! But who cares if you're just gonna eat them right? Meri saw them, she can tell you. Dad's birds are all about 6-8 months old, and these birds are HUGE!!

You should buy the chicks off me!! My bator will be cleaned out in a week or less, as soon as my quail and the other chicken eggs hatch.

Thanks...We think that is what got my favorite blue cochin bantam a few days ago...Nothing but a couple piles of feathers under a tree. Neighbor scared off a red-tail hawk last week when he saw it hanging around close to the coop...Guess it didn't work.

It's good to have neighbor that like my chickens...

Oreo and Mooney are australorps. Mooney is BIG, but Oreo is smaller. I think Mooney is normal size for australorps, though. I'd say they get about as big as your dad's chickens. I know Marley (australorp roo) was HUGE.

It took them awhile to get to size, but once they hit like 16 weeks they really grew fast.

I had thought about using it as a bator, but didn't know if I could regulate heat that well in it.

Meri---Are you sure Loretta is a she?? She sure does have a lot of color for a hen. She kinda reminds me of a Modern game bantam, but I'm not sure how big they get. But from the way she carries herself, that's what she looks like. The coloring looks a lot like my roo Charlie.

estpr13&cthrash1---yeah the hawks have been really bad. I had 14 circling my house one day last week!!! I think that's what has gotten 2 of my OEGB pullets, and probably my little baby jap
sad.png
I think my blue splash hen is missing a chick too, don't know what happened with that...

I finally got my baby chicks out of the house!! They are on the porch in a big wooden box, with about 5 or 6 inches of pine shavings in there! This box is humongous, and they are loving it!! If any of my quail eggs hatch, they are gonna stay inside in an aquarium, at least until they start to make me sick too.

You could always get a light dimmer switch to adjust the temp better! One of my black chicks that you saw is a roo, and he is all black. The other two are pullets, one has silver feathers on her breast, the other has rust colored feathers!! Do the austrolorps get colored, or are they just plain black? These chicks are pretty young, about 2&1/2-3 months at most. dad's large breed 'chicks' that were running around the yard are only about 4 months old, and they are almost as big as his other chickens, except the ones that look like my black ones. They are big, but not as big. But mine are a lot smaller, and they aren't growing that fast either.

<ETA> Meri---Your jap babies are so pretty!! I think I kept the ugly ones!! I would love to see what Cindy's look like!! (hint, hint

Well, that's the thing. I don't know

I got her from Scott over in Edmonton - she had snuck into one of his pens of other chickens, he didn't know how she got there. He didn't have (as far as I could see) and modern games at all - but she definately has modern game in her.

She has crowed once or twice, but not for a long time. She is more aggressive than the hens, but I figured that was partly due to her size - she is a lot taller than they are - longer legs of the modern game goign for her.

She could well be a roo - but I haven't any idea if she is or not. That's why we call her Loretta (sweet Loretta Martin, thought she was a woman, but she was another man... get back, get back... you know the rest, LOL).

I have no use for her here, though, so if you want her you can have her - or if anyone else wants her/him they can have ... um... It.
wink.png

She is colorful for a hen, but since she hadn't any cape feathers to speak of, I figured maybe it was because she was such a mutt. She has hackles and some towards her tail, but none across her back like all my other game roos have.

Your guess is as good as mine

Meri - Save one of those male BTWJs for me...I'll pick him up one of these days. Tonight I will be removing the Golden Comet, Millie and either Millie or BTBJ eggs tonight to put in the hatcher...There are so few due these next two weeks that I can probably keep them in my plastic brooder bin until the larger batch hatches.

Shelley - Maybe his big white ones are either White giant Cochins or light Brahmas. My australorp grew slowly from May through around the middle of August then suddenly took off for a while and is now at the point where she is filling out but not growing anymore. She looks to be around 5lbs right now. She is a good standard size not trim like my Ancona but not huge like my white Cochin. Speaking of Cochins is this what his looks like?

And here is a pic of my Australorp next to the faverolle and guinea...Not a great pic but may give you an idea anyways.

Mine were just black, but in the sunshine they get a green sheen to their feathers - they are rather pretty, I think. (but man are they hogs for treats, LOL).

Yeah, the japs are looking very pretty lately. I'm glad they finally decided to come out into the run more and mingle with the other chickens in there. They stick to a group, but they at least get outside. They look very pretty with all the darker banties running aroud in there - other than Jr. They are the only white chickens I have.

Jr. is George's chick hatched out with Shug - I have a pic of her, too.
