So.... Meri is on Donkey Watch

We got another calf tonight, and I was out there chatting with the neighbor and noticed Michelle's teats are really full. Poor girl - her belly earlier had also been lopsided, like the baby was turning or something - kept kicking out her side with one foot.

No waxing yet, but definately full of milk. She also kept kicking Spooky away today (grumpy) that is usually a good sign (although, not for poor Spooky

So, hopefully by next friday (or sooner) I'll have a home grown baby donkey

nifty, eh?

Michelle is a dun color, but the daddy is a dark brown (like Blackjack is, for those who've seen pics of him - he's not the daddy, btw). Spooky has the same daddy, but she came out dun colored like Michelle. Michelle is unique looking, though, among our donkeys - she has very short hair and is colored and feels and looks like a deer, more than a donkey.

Now, one of our other donkeys is her baby, too - I think Nibbler is hers (the guy told us, it's either Nibs or Maggie, cannot recall which - but Nibs is younger, so I think it's her.)

I haven't been on birth watch since I was a youngster on the farm - last one I recall foaling was our Appy horse who just HAD to have her foal during a January ice storm - so the vet couldn't make it out there.

We had 2 inches of ice before it was done storming - and the ugliest foal you've ever seen

- he turned out pretty, though, once he got his true color to him.

I'd love to stick her in the corral, but all the old timers around here say that donkeys prefer to be out in the field (they get more nervous being cooped up). So, we'll see, I may cave in and put her in the corral anyway

depends on the weather, I guess. She is in the small pasture anyway - the big pasture isn't fenced yet, so they have only about two or three acres near the barn and house.

Way cool Meri, hope all goes well with the birth and no complications.

Shelley it was good talking to you again today. I also talked to Flowerpot and asked her to keep an eye out for anyone selling a White Silkie roo for you, she has a knack for finding things.

I'm looking forward to our upcoming trip to the ChickenStock in Indiana August 1. Should be a good time for all. Anybody else want to join up with us let me know.

I am considering going. I havent told the DH yet. He doesnt like me having a life.
Plus I need to have that MG test run on my chickens. They had an eye funk, which is better know. But I am worried about spreading. There is a couple of people wanting silkies. I have bunches of babes. So I just dont know yet.

Yeah, first donkey to have a baby (even though Mama was supposed to be bred - never happened).

If I call anyone it'll be Jr. Walker down the road - the man has about 40 donkeys by now - has done donkeys and mules for years. (Jr. is about 89 years old - interesting old guy to chat with

Meri - hope everything goes well with the delivery. I know the waiting always makes me a bundle of nerves!

Just thought I'd let everyone know that my plan for free range guineas to eat our tick problem didn't work out too well. They ran off, got them back home and now are gone again. No one has seen them for several days and there was a strange beagle in the area. My nephews rooster is also missing some tail feathers and is now roosting in the VERY top of a tree. Something's not quite right about all that.

Wow sorry about your troubles! strut, guineas etc.

I cant get my guineas to leave they hang around and wait to be fed with the pigeons, marans etc.
But they do eat the ticks as well havent seen hardly a tick this year.

BTW Paris swap was a flop. too many sellers & no buyers

As my father in law says, it's all part of it. I just really hate that part. Strut had become my favorite

I think he was starting to enjoy being petted.
