no more chciks - at least until Christmas - then I can deal with chicks
meri
But these are pullet chicks! I'm going to get some to replace dad's RIR (he said he wants BR, I want EE
). I think we're gonna get the rainbow layers, though I'm considering getting one of each set, keeping a few that we want, and selling the rest. They'd be laying age by March, so should be top dollar!
I don't know if I'll do that, but it's an option.

Only thig I might consider ordering as chicks right now would be some LF Blue Cochins - and no one has any of those right now --- so I'm safe

Did you contact ladrifter and see if he had any eggs? He got a black roo from me, and he had 3 splash hens. So all his birds' eggs will hatch blue chicks.
we'll see if I can stick to it) is to not get anymore chickens (except the ones on my want list) until spring - by then I'll have overwintered my breeders, maybe culled a few more "not up to par" and I'll have room and time to mess with them then.
I actually have a lot of chickens right now to still sort out to respective coops - 5 orps, 5 cochins, 6 barred rocks, the bantam rocks (with the blue cochin girl) I have two extra BR pullets I am raising to see if I want to add them to the flock (one of my BR hens is not that fantastic, so she may get replaced, is a good girl, would make a good laying hen, just not breeder quality - I think she may be a mix mutt that accidently got into the pures - my fault, she is one out of Mr. Speckles and a white rock hen.)
I also have a buttload of quail to sort out (mostly to butcher) and figure out how many I can actually sell, so figure out how many it'll pay to keep as breeders. The quail are taking up George's coop right now, so I want to have them done (butchered or caged) by the end of the month.
so I have for sure about 7 rir chicks ready to go - about 7 columbian rock pullets ready to go, and a few mixed mutts that I need to get rid of, also.
so... I need time and space before I can dd any into the flock.

I think I mentioned it to him either here or on the Chickenstock thread - and I think he said he'd see once they started laying. If he's the one I spoke to about it

I was thinking of getting some to raise so I could sell them as POL pullets in the spring. At less than $2 a chick, I should be able to make a decent profit. I could mix that 16% feed and flock raiser together to feed them (thinking 1 bag of FR to 3 bags of 16%). 50 chicks at $1.66 each ($83.00), then sell them for $10 each ($500), even with the feed it would take to raise them, I'd still come out ahead. We have a lot of those hog panels, so I can make large tractors for them. My birds right now go through about $25 worth of feed a week, but that's for about 100 chickens, 20 ducks, geese, guineas, quail. So an extra 50 or so chickens wouldn't make that much difference. I'm thinking the 3 bags of 16% and 1 bag of flock raiser would probably last a month, and it would only be $30. So $30 for 5 months (we'll say $40 a month, just to be safe), plus the $83 total starting expenses, I would still be looking at a decent profit
We would keep only a very few of them, like 10 or so. We could even make them a pen with the hog panels, and add some kind of coop. That's the idea anyway.
