I thought Meri was keeping her blue one?

Well, I heard from Jamie tonight how many quail he wants, so I guess I'm gonna begin to process the quail tomorrow. I have to do his, definately, but I'll probably do the ones for Chickenstock closer to friday, so I don't have to freeze them.

I'm trying to think of some other ways to grill them besides just the bacon wrapped ones - maybe get some variety in there.

I make a very tasty honey glaze that might not be bad on them - usually I do it on chicken with skin (these won't have skin) but it might taste ok anyway.

Oh, and I am running into town tomorrow, because I can perhaps get a grant for part of my fencing I need to put in for the cows - that would be cool. They'll pay half up to 2000 bucks (meaning if it costs me 4000 they'll pay 2000 - if it costs 3000 they'll pay 1500, etc...) I believe the going rate is 1.50 per linear foot, so I could get them to pay quite a bit of it.

Hey, about a month or two ago may daughter ( 4 years old) bought some soap from you. Little heat shaped soap....very cute.
I think we talked about pygmy goats........lol

Ok, I thought Call ducks were seasonal layers!!!!

silly DD is laying in a nest in the barn.

Fluffy (the hen) came in and disturbed her laying this morning and got bit on the tail for it. I don't now if they are fertile or not, but at least these ones are in a better protected spot than out in the calf pasture (not much better, but under a roof, at least).

If she goes to set on them, I may put her and the eggs into a cage so she can hatch some (since she seems determined). Depends on if the weather turns nasty early this year, I may just toss them, also. Oh, and Miss Purdy is also laying in the same nest (she was laying there first, which sort of gave DD the idea, I think).

I processed 12 quail this morning - Jamie's and some extras. I figured I may as well do an even number of them, so I can just toss them in the freezer. I found out that 12 is about my limit for processing quail before it gets old, (actually, I was ready to quit at 10

). So I'd better do some more during the week so I dont have all of them to do thursday or friday before Chickenstock.

shoot, done chores, processed quail, and hubby isn't even out of bed yet - the lazy butt.

btw - for anyone who didn't see it, I've decided that Gump's gotta go.

I would have sold him or culled him before this, but Hubby likes him.
(oh yeah, it's hubby's birthday today too, gonna have to remember that for when he hauls his butt outta bed).

He's a nice enough roo, but he is big (almost as big as Mr. Speckles was) and he has inherited his daddy's methods of wooing, which makes the hens a bit nervous to be around him. He is especially fond of my Buff Orps, and I can't have that

So, if anyone wants him, I can bring him along to Chickenstock (or I'll just take him out to Sano). Fluffy still runs around with him sometimes, but she is not nearly as attached to him as she was, so I don't think she'll miss him much if he goes. (she's been flirting with my Black Cochin rooster

). If I dont have a "dibs" however, I won't bring him along. he is pretty large and wouldn't be happy in a cage all day.

Well, I am officially a Farm
lau.gif
got my number today - also applied for the grant, should know by the end of the month whether we made the cut on the grant or not. Apparently out of everyone who applies, they only have enough money for 90 people. They do a review process (go over everyone's applications and see who is deserving
lau.gif
).

I applied for grant money for fencing, water upgrades (like a pond or water troughs, etc...) and forage upgrades (like fertilizer, seed, etc...).

I really need all three - I need the water if I put in the fencing (which I need to do anyway, whether it's all on me or what) and I need the forage improvements because our fields haven't been limed, fertilized etc... in ages.

I also found out I qualify for a 58 dollar check
lau.gif
from the state because A) we had corn growing here once (even if I don't have it there, now) and B) even though it was less than 10 acres of corn, I qualify as a Minority Farmer (cause I'm a woman) so I get the check anyway. If it were just hubby on the deed, he wouldn't get it.

Hmmm, I suppose if I'm gonna have the farm as our business, I'd better read up on any grants and money I can get.

Speaking of Grants - I REALLY need to remember to bring Cindy's grant book back to her at Chickenstock - I always forget to give it to her when I see her.
