I would say it's a pullet, but maybe mixed with something. Did you get it from an auction or from a hatchery?

It looks like some of the Delaware/White Rock chicks I hatched out. They came out barred (some of them) but didn't have good BR barring.
(The Delaware's barring wasn't restricted in some of the chicks - so they had barring all over instead of in a Columbian Pattern.)

eta - that would also explain the yellow feet rather than the dusky feet of a BR Pullet.

Might wanna try the feather test. Lift up one of the hackle feathers; if it's pointed on the end it's a cockeral, rounded- pullet. Works very accurately on all breeds except those that have hen feathered roosters (like sebrights).

Well, I did get an email saying that my chicks are en route, but I also got a phone call
hmm.png
The phone call was because they didn't have enough of the red quill OEGB to fill it, so they sent it short

They had 11, I ordered 15. There was no mention of a refund or credit or anything, so idk what's going on with that. So I'll probably get a lot of packing peanuts, maybe they added some extra tophats?

Ametaus...

so far I have three babies out - one is definately George's baby - has that chipmunk stripes down it's back. Might be out of shug (Jr.'s mama and BabyMama's grandma) it came out of a smaller egg.

Had one come out sticky - super sticky - it's a BR pullet (might be Gump or George as daddy, but it looks rather BR and not mixed). It's not doing so great, though, because of the stickiness dried on it. So far it just keeps getting hung up on it's back and not turning over on it's own - we'll see how it turns out. The third one is a yellowish color, it came out first (the one that hatched in the turner) not sure who it belongs to

The two eggs that I think are Cochin eggs are pipped - but no hatch yet, and I am worried about that humidty might shrink wrap them - since I forgot about the hatch and didn't even put them into the hatcher until after the first one hatched. I still can't get the humidity above 50%

I'll try putting some paper towel in there and see if I can raise the humidity at all.

Yeah I agree on the barred Rock looking bird the barring should be more evenly distributed... too much conflict of white on the chest... But I still feel it is a girly, could be wrong but thats what my 2 cents are on it.... But regardless... Those are such sweet pics

I still have that pic of BC before Meri got her, where she is hiding the Jap baby under her... She was motherly even as a baby

Ok, so Shelley and Cindy, you've been to my house...

I went out to do chores tonight, and (hubby says they just went off again) the coyotes are down in the woods next to my house gathering up - howling to each other.

Maybe just down at the bottom of that hill (the one to the right of the house if you're facing the house - behind the woodpile - and behind my lower chicken coops

)

Bruce said it sounds like they are going further away, though (I can't hear them in the office).

dang coyotes - after two of them chased my dogs this morning, I might just take the gun with me whenever I go do chores tomorrow. I have some outside cleanup to do, will have it close by too.

I don't have anything against coyotes, unless they are after my critters. And they've already taken a chicken this summer in broad daylight - so they are fair game if I see them on my land.

Thought about that, seriously considered putting a donkey in with the calves tonight - but they are all up by the barn (they sleep up there at night) so I think they'll be safe enough.

eta - the little babies are in the corral, and the older ones are all at least 150 pounds by now, so maybe not a good coyote snack.

I haven't been there since you put the calf stalls in, but is there anyway you can put a donkey or two in with the calves to keep the coyotes away from them? I'd at least be taking a dog outside with me, though apparently that's not enough of a deterrent.

The corral that the calves are in is pretty heavy duty - they'd have to climb a 6 foot wall to get into it. (we built it for pigs or goats or whatever might go in there, so it is really secure.)

Even if the donkeys aren't in the same pen, they are adjacent to it, and would give a yell if the coyotes got too close - especially with that baby donkey out there - I've seen them before when a coyote even got within sight of them - they lined up and all went off hee-hawing on them (with the babies behind them for protection - butters and spooky were the babies at the time). It was pretty impressive, actually, to see how they all got into herd mode and decided nobody was gonna hurt their babies. Even with Smokey, they all take turns playing with him and teaching him stuff - it is so cute
