Mojo Chick'n :

I finally got almost all of the bottle baby calves weaned (only three full time now, two are being weaned - I started with TWELVE!!) and Tim called me tonight to come pick up another one or two tomorrow. I'm such a sucker. But they're so cute - and I hope they'll make me some money.

Hey Meri! Are you getting your bottle babies from a dairy? I'm looking for a couple relatively inexpensive calves and am struggling! I don't particularly wanna go to the stockyard, but that may be where I end up.

Well, with the nasty cold, I figured I'd better do something with the coops and calf stalls, so I spent all morning cleaning and putting hay in the coops and calf stalls. Looks rather cozy out there, and I even got that dang top coop finished, finally

I've been talking about cleaning it for three months, I think (it's been empty all that time - perfectly good coop going to waste.)

Now I just have to figure out who to put where. Technically the top coop is my brooder coop - so whomever goes into it will have to get along with babies ok - maybe I'll put the cochins in there. I have a cochin hen who thinks she wants to hatch eggs, silly girl. I'm not about to let her do that this time of year. I have fewer cochins than any other breed, except the bantam rocks. I may stick them up there, too, cause the buff and black look good together running around, and that top coop has a lot more room than the lower cells, do. Not much for higher perches, so the cochins can have the floor and lower perches, and the four buff rocks can take the higher perch areas. The orps can go into the top cell of the lower coop, George in the middle (no run - they can go free range still - I don't hatch their eggs) and the barred rock girls and overflow in the bottom cell (since my BR Roo took a dirt nap).

The fun part will be trying to net them all and seperate them when they don't want to be caught LOL. Probably take me a couple of days, at least, to get them where they are supposed to go. I have two girls inside who can go out to the brooder coop once I get the others settled in place. They are getting pretty big for a brooder bin - they were Thanksgiving hatches, so they're 6 weeks old - I'll wait until this cold snap is passed, though, to put them out.

Hmmmmm......we put straw in our cow stall and he eats it all.....guess he will sleep on the cold ground. He gets a 5 gallon bucket and a half of feed a day plus straw......i am calling him pigcow from now on.

that's why I use hay - I figure that way they have munchies, too.

Greetings Kentucky people !
I've been reading this forum for about 6 months now, the three before we got our chickens and the three since. Thanks to everyone for their good ideas and advice, even if you didn't know I was reading it. Hope everyone is staying warm.

Anyways, I was wondering if there is anyone out there in or near Lexington that would be interested in selling a couple of older pullets or young hens. We started with three hens, or so we thought. One turned out to be a rooster and one disappeared (the run is now fully covered), so I think our remaining Barred Rock hen could use some company, if only just for warmth. I'm not to particular about breed, a good layer and good disposition, I guess. I do live pretty close to some busy train tracks, so easily spooked might be a bad thing.

If anyone is in Lexington, I live... ahem, about a rooster's crow from Good Foods Coop, but would be happy to drive a reasonable distance. Most of the posts on craigslist are a 45+ minute drive (I know, if you live out in the country that isn't all that far), so I thought I would try here first.

Oh, and if anyone has any Lakenvelders I'd be very interested (and probably drive a lot further)since my little boy's name is Laken.

Hope you all enjoy viewing our new puppies born between 2 and 4 this morning... She had 6 pups. Eng. Staf. terrier mixed with Bichon Frise/Shih tzu(Teddy Bear)... Not very good pics as the kennel has a cover so had to use a flashlight.
They will be ready to give to new homes around Valentines Day... We will take them to the flea market that week and give them away so if anyone wants one speak now or forever hold your peace(or come to the flea market the weekend of Vday). 3 brindle, 2 brindle and white, and one black with small white strip on head and white tip on tail. 6 boys and 2 girls.
Will update in a couple of weeks with better pics

I've been lurking for about 3 months. A friend gave me a barnyard roo (White rock/BO) and I bought a BR and 2 RIR pullets in early Dec. We're near Irvine on a mountaintop.

Where's the nearest seller of hatching eggs? I'm interested in BRs, Marans, Barnevelders and maybe heritage turkeys. My son's teacher has an incubator and experience and I offered to get her some eggs.

Hey everyone -- Thanks for the well wishes and the hope that things will get better....

Well something got into the barn yard and the chicken coop and I found feathers everywhere... of course the dogs were locked in a horse stall so they won't bark at the wind all night but they couldn't do their job of protecting the flock locked in a stall.... grrrrr

Well, none of the big chickens are missing from what I can tell.... I can see some silkies and Mrs. Turbo's babies under the chicken coop but I can't count them to know if all 12 of Chuck's silkies are there.... I found two outside the barn yard and they seem to be fine....

Now they will not come out from under the coop.... And one of my Scovie girls has decided to brood on a batch of eggs under the coop... I can't tell how many but I did feel three... I'm pretty sure the nest is big like last time and will have 10-12 eggs in it... this is NOT the time of year for baby ducks... I think she's daft...

I saw the new billy out doing his stuff so I should have some baby goats in May!!

Hubster is doing okay... his sugar is still not where it should be and his blood pressure is weird... we ended up at the emergency room on Friday (Happy New Year) for 4 hours until they got his blood pressure up from 80/50... I'm taking him to the docs in a few min to see what the doc has to say....
