Kentucky people

Sorry to hear about James Brown, Chiknmama. Hope you don't loose any more. This would be a scary and tense time for me. Hope you are doing well.

I just hatched 16 of 16 Delaware roo x Cornish hens. My first truly 100% hatch. The eggs I bought off of ebay from Arkansas, were smaller than I expected. They were well packed and my mail man has delivered enough eggs to know how to handle them.

I let them set pointy end down for 24 hours before plugging in the bator. I have found out that if I just put them in the bator and ignore them, other than temp and humidity that they do quite well. (I have an auto turner.)

These are meat chickens which are supposed to be slower growing and better tasting. We'll see. I'm not much of a cook.

Thanks for the sympathy

I'll be interested to hear what your chickens turn out like. I'm considering a meat chicken cross breeding project, here. I was considering Plymouth Rocks and Orpingtons. Both are early maturing (not as fast as the cornish X of course, but earlier than many chickens). And both are reasonably broad breasted. They ought to be ready to butcher at 4 months, from what I've heard from other folks.

Congrats on the hatch

hope mine does at least half of what I have in the bator.

Peace -

Ok, update on the Jap boy.

He is still alive this morning, but both his eyes are swollen shut, and he can't see at all.

I know it sounds heartless of me, but I think I'm just going to go and cull him today. I would hate to see him suffer anymore. Now he can't even find the food and water on his own.

I candled again last night, LOL - last time I'm going to candle at all - I'll just leave it for now and see what hatches. I did find a quitter (had a blod ring) and I believe I have a few other quitters, but they don't stink, so they stay - at least they'll help even out the temps in there.

Tonight when I go to feed donkeys I'll grab a cage to bring in - I don't think I'll need the playpen just yet, I doubt I'll have that many to begin with. Besides that sewing room isn't that big to be putting it in there with the table holding the bator in there, too.

I'm getting nervous about the incubator, now that it is getting closer to hatch. I am wondering if any of them will hatch, if the eggs I candled look right (never done this before) or if I am just gonna lose them all. With everything else happening with the chickens, I want to at least have some babies to play with and not have all of them die on me. Thursday is my last day to turn them.

I hope I have at least one of my eggs hatch (from my place, I mean) and I hope I have a black australorp mix with George - I am curious to see how it'll look, and I love my BA hens, they are so funny and friendly. The one chick I had out of George and an orange hen came out white with some black flecks - nothing like I expected it to look like. But then, I have no idea what went into the breeding of that orange hen.

It's supposed to rain a lot this week, so maybe I'll do some baking and make some candy for Thanksgiving, and decorate the house. That might cheer me up a bit, and keep me from obsessing over the incubator.

I already put out the crystal nativity scene, and a couple other decorations

hubby said "oh, not this early?!?" I said yeah, this early

I want to get my porch lights up, too. My tree is over in the boy's place, but that'll have to wait til after Thanksgiving. I have plenty of other stuff to decorate with before I get that put up.

Oh, and Sam has to clean their place today, I gave him an ultimatum. I had to go over there yesterday to get Jon and it is a sty. Sam got a new xbox360 (his friend in Michigan bought it for him and had it sent here) so that is all he's done for a week.
I have company coming for Thanksgiving (possibly, my mom and step dad) so their place has to be cleaned top to bottom. The guest room is in their house, not mine.

I do have to say, though, I love having my teenagers have their own place to trash and leave my house cleaner. It certainly saves a lot of arguments.

When we moved in and the neighbor kid (he's 13) found out that Jon and Sam would have their own house he about flipped

His dad actually has a house for him, now, they are fixing it up for when he is out of high school so he can live on the property and pay rent to Mom and Dad. His is an old small house that was on his aunt's property that she wanted removed, they moved it to their place and have been working on it all summer. That kid is very glad we gave his parents the idea

. His is done enough that he has his games and such there, he can go and be alone and play games and snack and not be bothered by "adults" . He's a sweet kid.

I have a lot to get done today otuside before the rain hits. We did manage to cover the baler yesterday, but we needed more rope, so we got that and a couple more tarps for other equipment. But I don't mind, since I know I'll have about four days of rain to be inside and do some stuff in here.

Four days of rain - I guess winter is here, eh?

I had to get a photobucket acount (it's free, and easy to sign up)

http://photobucket.com/

Then set you photos to upload at (I think) 640x480 and they will automatically re-size to that (if they are bigger than that).

Then you can copy the url for the pic right into the in your post.

You can also edit the pics in photobucket.

heya all -

It's supposed to be cold tonight - like 25 degrees cold, and I was worried about Miss Celie being out in the breeze. She sleeps on top of the woodpile, and usually goes to roost when I put the other chickens in the coop. Well, tonight I wasn't gonna let her stay out to freeze, so I went over and grabbed her and put her in the coop with the rest.

I am hoping she'll notice how good the heat lamp feels and the nice accommodations (I just added another bale of bedding tonight) and want to come into the coop from now on. She has acted the last couple of nights like she wanted to go in, but then high tailed it back to her roost when I was ready to shut the door. Maybe she just wanted a forceful invitation

I got the cage in the sewing room - have it partially set up. I still need to put a heat lamp in there, but I am going to Day & Day Wednesday to pick up the flock blocks, so I can grab an extra one then.

I think I might go ahead and have her order me some of the Purina in crumbles, too - so I only have to buy one more bag at M&W (cause I'm almost out). Too bad they won't eat the pellets. Come to think of it, I have a partial bag of pellets, I suppose I could just smash those up to hold me until the crumbles come in.

lau.gif
maybe I can just pour them into a feed bag (from the cracked corn) and run over it a few times with the truck. Would save my back on trying to smash them myself.

Well, I think I'll go check on everyone and turn off lights -

Well, I have lost another bird...
sad.png
My little rooster, Big Poppa, the daddy to all the babies, has disappeared. All I could find was a small pile of white tipped grey feathers.
hit.gif
I can't believe it!! I was tossing some cracked corn out to them, and went into the barn to feed the bunnies. Came back out maybe 15 minutes later to check dad's eggs, and there was the feathers, right behind the barn. Meri knows the set up. It is unbelievable to me that something got him right there, in such a short amount of time. Now the only roos I have are the red pyle boys.
barnie.gif
Of course all of them are still here!! Why is it always your favs that disappear?? At least my little splash hens are smart enough to hide. The OEGB hen doesn't even come out of the barn. She's usually up in the rafters all day. I guess that's the only place the boys will leave her alone. Now I have no dutch roo!! Most all mine now are OEGB, or OEG, except the one with the pea comb, and the silkies. Really sucks...

Oh btw, if for some reason I'm not on for a while, it is probably because my stupid computer keeps crashing, and I have thrown it out the window!! I have been trying to research for an assignment, due today no less, for the past 2 days. Every time I get some good info, and get a lot of it typed out, the stupid PC crashes!!

Any computer experts on here?
