Ok, here's the parent birds (this pic belongs to sandspoultry - the eggs were from their flock)

Well, considering how much Hoss has changed just since ya brought him here, I can't wait to see how those three turn out finally.

I hope they get some splash in them, makes them interesting to look at, I think (not that they aren't adorable in any color, of course

I'm so glad I at least got three cochins out of the bunch!!)

eta - Now let's hope they aren't all roos!!!

Evening all.

Chicknmama I just checked out your coops and condos. You must have a really good man to spend so much money and spend so much time making those houses. Either that or your chicks have a spell over him.

I just caught a possum. I have more wild life here in Lexington than I ever did in the country.

Everyone in KY.

What kind of greens are you feeding your chickens now that everything is brown and trying to freeze up?

Hubby is a treasure (usually

)

I've been tossing them leftover greens from salads, and they still can find a tiny bit of green out free ranging, but not much. I ordered some flock blocks and ought to be getting those this wednesday - I've never tried them before, but I figure it'll be something to keep em occupied for awhile - especially if they have to be cooped up on a really bad day.

I have had a prob with racoons, but not much else. I did have this one little owl that hung out for awhile because the guineas had just been turned out. It was less than half their size,
lau.gif
but they were intimidated anyway. I haven't seen it lately, though (but I hear it sometimes down in the woods - it went looking for smaller prey, I assume). The coyotes stay away from the animal area because I have 9 donkeys
lau.gif
, they don't like coyotes, and the coyotes know it.

Yeah, I haven't had any problem with predators much lately, besides the 3 little guineas I turned out. Every one of them disappeared! The only problem I have is with air predators, and that isn't much. My dad's dog keeps everything away. Except for my dog. If she gets loose then most likely something will die!!

As for greens, mine all free range, and are still getting some stuff. For the few that are in cages, they get some hay once in a while to scratch in. Plus they like to hang out with the bunnies, they drop hay all the time!

Meri and Cindy--- I'm pretty sure you both heard Gertie squawking the other day when you were here. I wish I had some kind of sound recording device!! It literally sounds like she is squawking 'GO AWAY!!!' It is so funny!!

My eggs have hatched. Out of 14 eggs I got 3 chicks. Don't know what went wrong this time. I had the temp a bit lower than normal, cause they always hatch early. I tossed 2 that had died about a week ago, but still had 12 that looked good. Yesterday I had 2 chicks hatch. When I put them in the hatcher, one was already pipped, and one was peeping. I noticed a few that looked like they had died, but not many. Last night I decided to candle them to see if there were anymore that were any good. I found one that was peeping (the one that hatched this morning), but all the rest look like they are quitters. They aren't even full. Some are mostly, like they quit around day 16ish. Don't know what went wrong. Any ideas?

Oh btw, Charlie is a daddy!! The chick that hatched this morning was one of Gertie's, and she was Charlie's girl. All the chicks are hers actually, but this one has red feathers on it's neck. It is so cute!! It has an almost pure white head, white wings (like the others!), and a redneck. I'll take pics of my new babies once I get them all dried off.

he sounds interesting looking. You know, George's first baby was mostly white with some black on her - weird, eh?

Sorry to hear about the horrible hatch - my other eggs weren't any good either. But I have 8 babies (out of 50 eggs - not a good %
lau.gif
but at least I got me some cochins.)

Can't wait to see pics of your babies.

I have the incubator all cleaned up and ready to go again
wink.png

I'm thinking I may need either a hatcher or another incubator
gig.gif
I simply cannot do the 21 day thing. I need to start staggering hatches so I can get my fix sooner - Plus, Cindy said she was bringing some cochin eggs, and I got the orp eggs coming - I have to do something about that.

Like I said, I have the styro cooler, I think I'm gonna try to make a hatcher. Plus, it'll keep my incubator cleaner (it was so icky this morning to clean
sickbyc.gif
) Making one will be cheaper than buying another bator (especially since Hubby has no idea how much 4 flock blocks are gonna cost me on wednesday
lau.gif
he'd have a fit if he knew)
I can get a lamp kit cheap, and then all I'll need is the wire for the cage on the bottom. Jon probably has two fans I can get from him.

All I know is that I'm hooked on the incubating thing.
lau.gif
Hubby doesn't know what he got himself into buying me that bator. I guess it's a good thing I got my own hatching room where I can shut the door and he doesn't have to hear or see all those babies.

Now if I could just set up my computer in there, I'd be all set

He likes the little babies, though, he comes in to check on them once a day at least. I'll turn him into a "chicken man" before he knows it.

ETA I talked to spydertoys (over in edmonton) and she has large cochins - I'm gonna get some eggs from her in the spring when hers begin to lay and try the large cochins again then.

I have a water heater thermostat I bought for mine, never even opened it. I paid $8 for it at Lowe's, if you want it instead of looking for one. I use a light dimmer switch in mine. With the heat running it keeps temps pretty good. Just some ideas.
