You don't need any game roos do ya? I bought a hen this fall with 6 chicks, only one pullet out of the whole bunch!

Coolness, I'll have to get some hatching eggs from ya next summer, maybe - just to play with

BTW - I have a Q for everyone....

I plan to expand the dual purpose flock to roughly 20-ish hens. I don't want to "over-roo" them, but I was wondering if One roo could do the deed properly with that many ladies. I don't mind getting another roo for that flock, but want to make sure I am not overbreeding the girls.

On the other hand, I could always get more hens, too

But, with average of about 20 hens, would two roos be too much, in your opinion? I know there are a ton of variables, like what the roo temperaments are, etc...

I was thinking if I got another roo, I'd get another Delaware roo - so I'd at least (for sure) have pure Del babies from the Del hens.
Unless some other roo could make easily sex linked babies when the chicks hatch.

I'm tempted to throw in a dark cornish roo on the mix, but, I want those pure bred Dels, too, and not sure if the chicks would be easy to tell if they are pure Del or Cornish/Del.

Has anyone bred Dark Cornish on a Del hen? And are Dark Cornish aggressive in general (I know, variables again)?

No, I think the most hens a roo can cover to ensure fertility is 10:1. I would honestly get 3 roos for 20 hens, just to make sure they are fertile. You can always process one of the roos if it seems the girls are getting worn out.

True, I can always butcher (part of the reason for having them anyway

)

I can actually add on 5 roos to the order I make with Cackle, and butcher the extra roos before breeding begins. Plus, I could pick and choose the best looking roos to keep, that way.

That's why I'm asking now, before I put the order in, so I can order 5 of some roos instead of looking high and low for the proper roo at auction or on here. I know the Dark Cornish cockerels are only a buck each, but I'm thinking if I get 5 of them, I'll go with the Dels. Oh, just checked, the Del cockerels are a buck each, too. Just adding 5 birds doesn't change my shipping, either.

They start hatching in Mid February - I am dying for Jan. 1st so I can put the order in!!!!! I can wait for chicks, as long as I know they are MINE and not sold out of what I want.

Oh, and my egg basket I want ends today - no bids on it yet, hope I get that one, it is very pretty. I like the shape of it, pretty to look at, and very functional (big). I'm tired of carrying them in my pockets

I keep forgetting they are there. I could use something else to carry them, but I want it and I'm spoiled, so I'm gonna get it!!

hmm... wonder if I shouldn't get 20 hens, instead of 15....

eta = naw, once I get them breeding, I can add to my flock that way

Since you are wanting a small sized order anyway, I wonder if you could specify what breed of packing peanuts they ship with? Maybe that way you could get them for free?? Worth a shot. If you do order some males, they might just toss in extra male dels anyway! I need to check out their site. I was thinking of adding a few of something on your order, if you don't care. Not sure if they have anything I'd want though.
