Maybe your mailman won't do that because of the driveway or he thinks he can't get through the gate. Either way, if he cannot leave it properly he ought to leave a card for you to come and get it at the post office - that is standard procedure - that is why they have the dang cards.
It would be different if you had asked him to hang packages off the mailbox in a bag - but you didn't. It was up to him to do his job properly, and leave the card and take the package back with him to the PO.
