That's why I am afraid to incubate duck or goose eggs - I hear they are hard to get to hatch.

The last ones I did went pretty good. I had 2 hatch out of 5, would have been 3 but Cris opened the bator when I was outside. So the last one got stuck in the shell and I didn't realize it till it was too late. These would probably have done better if the stupid bator hadn't quit on me. I lost a lot then, and I don't know what's going on now. I like the cayugas, you can tell when they pip internally. Their black down shows through the shell!!

Me and Mojo are in Adair county. Where are you located at? You will have fun here, it is very addictive!

On the vent clipping for fertility thought. In pigeons it is necessary to trim the vents of some extra fluffy breeds to increase fertility. But I would pluck the feathers rather than cut...if they are stiff feathers. If you cut stiff feathers they could get sharp? Maybe hen vent feathers are always fluffy I havent flipped mine over to see. lol

I think the ones that need to be clipped are pretty fluffy! You can pluck them, but that would take forever!!

Did you get your little girl yet matt y.?

My son had a pair of parlor rollers given to him the other day. We still haven't gotten them to 'roll'. I'll have to try that tomorrow, I've got too much stuff to do today!

Just a quick hop on to post a pic.... will be back later, though.

Well, it is supposed to get VERY cold this next week - so to save money on running heat lamps, this is what Hubby told me to do

She had a fit when I took her babies and put her in a cage to bring her in, but she is quite pleased with the accomodations at the moment.

Cindy - first pics of your new babies in there, too. Aren't they squishy cute?

This coming from the man that said you couldn't keep 'the chicken formerly known as Dumpling' in the house?? What did you end up naming her anyway? Where is she at now?

If you hated having baby chicks in there, I can just imagine how much fun it will be having a momma and babies in there!!

I'll make sure not to come and visit for a while!!

OK...

I am terrified of chicken diseases. BUT...Feb. is a whole month away and my chicken needs aren't being met. I NEED...

Cochins
Polish
Sussex
Golden Comets
Silkies
(and whatever else might be an interesting addition to my lonely coop)

So, if you have something or know someone who does and feel pretty certain the birds are healthy and disease free...tell me about it. I need to be tempted.

By the way...

I have two Salmon Fav pullets but only wanted one...I decided to keep two after reading they do better in pairs or with a buddy, has anyone else found this to be true?

Are you sure that it's really your husband and not some alien being in disquise? Or did he have a fall recently and hit his head?

it'll only be for a couple of weeks til this cold snap passes. With it getting down to 11 at night (soon) I didn't want to trust the heat lamp to keep the babies warm. Plus, if I move her inside, I can use the rubber containers for water - then just smack them out int he morning and refill.

This morning she looked like she was contemplating taking them OUTSIDE!!! Glad she changed her mind, but still - too much of a risk.

I'm beginning to wonder, myself. He just had me put about 18 eggs in the bator, and said he would fix the other one tonight so I can fill it tomorrow. (I have the new fan, just haven't gotten around to hooking it up yet.)

Oh, and he is talking now about building me a double coop with a shed between it and the main coop to store my stuff (cages, feed, etc...) He was gonna make it another triple coop, but I said make it a double, instead.
