Well, Jr. ought to be hatching this week sometime. I have no idea how many eggs she has, or whose eggs she has (I am thinking they are all hers - no one else has been laying in there for awhile).

Naturally, her eggs are hatching out when it decides to turn a bit colder again. Maybe I can talk her into going back to the coop once they hatch, or I may have to take the babies inside until they are older. She won't like that a bit.

I have button eggs that are supposed to hatch today - no activity at all on them. I have yet to succesfully hatch any of the button eggs.

The one silver male is pecking the head of the splash male. I am wondering if I need to get rid of one of the boys to save the poor little guy a major headache (or death). I never see them fight, really, but the evidence is there.

I don't plan on going big into Button Quail, but it might be nice to hatch a few for fun.

I've also been saving jumbo quail eggs to go into the incubator. One of my Jumbo hens had a bloody spot on her neck yesterday - I put some blukote on it. I'm not sure if she got it from the others, or from breeding, but I think it was just a blood feather ripped out. I inspected it and saw no actual wound/tear just a raw-ish spot and some blood. She seemed fine today, not huddled or puffy looking. Although one hen (not the picked at one) tried to jump into my hand and get out of the cage when I went to feed this morning. Would mice bother them? or is it just infighting do you think? I did see mouse droppings on the shelf next to their cage.

I would like to have another pen of jumbos to breed, too. 5 hens are sort of slow laying when you need so many to eat at one meal

I've got more chicken and button eggs that are due to hatch thursday, then another batch of chicken on the 25th.

When should your other button eggs have hatched? I have some of mine that 'I think' are due, but I don't remember exactly when I set them. I got my first egg from the jumbos yesterday, finally!! Now I just need to wait for the others to start up. I wonder if mario49's have started yet. Haven't seen him on here lately. And yes, I think mice would bother them, but if it was on her neck, they are probably fighting or she is getting injured during breeding. The males will sometimes pick a 'favorite' and breed that one to no end. Plus they hold onto their heads or necks, so that would probably be it.

You should seperate your buttons, if they are fighting. Buttons usually pair up, so it wouldn't hurt them to be seperated. Just divide that tank you have them in, and they should be fine.

The first person I sent eggs from my buttons to has hatched 3 so far. She said there are more that are rocking, so hopefully she will get more.

Oh yeah, I've also heard that button eggs shouldn't be 'transfered', like from a bator to a hatcher. I guess it messes them up. I know with my first button hatch, I did move them to a hatcher. Only got 1 to hatch from 20 eggs. The 2nd time they stayed in the same bator. I got 19 to hatch from 30, so I think they may be right.

Yeah, I may just buy another tank for the second pair. I'd hate to put a divider in there and cramp them too much.

The jumbo girls are all laying so I am getting 5 eggs a day out of the cage. I have a few to put into the bator next time it opens up.

Maybe instead of hatchign buttons I'll just sell fertile eggs. I know they're fertile, I cracked a couple of them open. I would, however, like to hatch at least one batch of them, myself.

Hubby likes the buttons - he was saying just the other night that the buttons are the coolest birds I have in there, cause he loves to hear the boys crow

.

Maybe I'll put button eggs into the homemade hatcher/bator and just leave them there until hatch without swapping them around. (without any other eggs in there with them)

She got some eggs from someone (not sure who) I am not sure if it was an egg swap or what - I think they were donated to her (or sold cheap to her) when her flock got hit by those dogs.

I think SmartiePants is closer to you - I'm in Adair county, so I don't get out that way, usually. I have been to Smith's Grove to the horse/donkey auction, but that's about it.

Well, and I've been to Penrod a couple of times to a Family Reunion.

Technically, Shelley and I are in Columbia, but I am actually down in Breeding, right near the county line.

I've only lived here for a little less than two years, so I don't know so many people yet.

I have a BIG Delaware roo with some Light Brahma hens (getting 15 Dellie pullets in march to go with him this fall) and I have a mixed flock of layers - with a Old English roo who is with those - mostly they are black australorp, a NH Red hen, a couple of barred rocks, He has about 10 hens in his coop, the Dellie roo has about 11 hens.

I've cut back a lot on my birds - I needed the coop space for dual purpose and other poultry. I just got 5 Call Ducks, and 21 Blue Swedish ducklings (only keeping 10 of those), plan to get a trio of geese in April. I also have a few Jumbo Quail I'm trying to get going.

Mostly I got rid of the "play" chickens, anything fancy or superfluous.

eta - when I get the dellie pullets, I'm getting 5 light Brahma straight run in hopes of having a brahma roo to go with the hens this fall, also.

edited again cause I can't seem to type today

I have 8 chicks, right now (more due on Thursday) from the flocks I have here. The Dellie / Brahma crosses are really pretty - a couple of the chicks are from the oeg and barred rock, and one is BA and oeg. One might be a dellie white rock cross - she/he looks more Dellie than brahma or white rock. They were hatched out about two weeks ago.

I am on the lookout, myself, for more laying hens, or POL Pullets. So I can't help ya with the pullets - but the straight run chicks I can sell. I have bators going all the time full of eggs, so I can always hatch more. I can't wait to get a Brahma pen and a Dellie pen so I have purebred chicks out of them.

I can take some pics. I was thinking 2 bucks a chick, since they're mixed.
