Hello all you Ky chicken people!
I bought some chickens from briarpatch farm and he told me about your group. I raise bantams, turkens, blue laced red wyandottes, Mandarin ducks, Guineas of color, peafowl and other assorted big stock(Lanfshun, RIR Etc.) I plan to start raising red golden pheasants again in the spring. I also am an avid gardener. Raise most of my own veggies and process and raise a lamb, steer and a couple of pigs at a friends farm for winter processing also.

I also buy and sell antique/collectibles/junk/plants/ on ebay and at local sales. I live in Rowan/Morehead. Went to college here and didn't want to leave. We live on a nice size mostly wooded acreage.
We also have various hounds(chicken protectors) Most of my flock free range. In a nut shell I love animals, plants(veggie/flower) and outdoors.

Always glad to have another Kentuckian aboard here. Join in the chit chat, feel free to ask questions or answer some. We are scattered all over the state but we are a friendly lot. Even planning some get togethers in the coming months, maybe.

Even though I live in the city, I have chickens, pigeons, dogs, house birds, tropical fish, and I also garden.

Well folks, I have good news today!!

I finally have found some duck eggs!!

Well, Princess actually found them. Evidently she ate one, and brought the other to the house for later. Cris saw the one in the yard, so we went hunting for the nest. Hopefully they are all laying in the same spot, cause we did find it! There was one other shell in the nest, so I know there were 2 at least. I have 4 ducks and 6 drakes that are old enough, so I should be getting 4 eggs a day. These were both white, so I'm assuming they were both from the pekins. I also have a cayuga (black or grey eggs mostly) and a rouen (blue/green eggs), so I'm fairly certain it was the pekins. They are the oldest of the 4, so it doesn't surprise me.

A friend of dad's had given him an old fiberglass truck topper, so we are going to go and pick that up and turn it into a duck house, so hopefully I can find the eggs easier. I'm thinking I can get them locked up in there at night eventually, then just wait till 9-10 am to let them out.

I also have finally started getting jumbo quail eggs, don't remember if I mentioned that before. Only 1 is laying so far, but at least they have started! No egg today though

I also had 4 baby tuxedo coturnix quail hatch overnight/this morning, and 1 silkie/EE mix chick. I was hoping that one was pure silkie, but it has green legs and racing stripes

All the silkies are white, except for Brutus, and he is grey (looks black with birchen markings).

Plus, I think I have figured out the problems with my incubator. I believe the thermometer that I bought and checked is not as accurate as I thought. I put a different thermometer in there that I have used successfully before, and it was reading 2 degrees low. So I bumped up the temp, and we'll see if that helps

So, all in all, a fairly decent day.

Silly birds! Don't you hate that? We have one that lays in the corner behind the quail's cage. I guess she thinks she is hiding her nest.

Well, I figured out how to save the waterfowl, here. We're going to build a pen. It's gonna cost me a good $200 bucks (maybe $250) but it'll be huge, and it'll save them from the dogs, at least.

Finished dimensions will be aproximately 40' x 25' . That'll give me room for a nice big pool/water tank in it. The "pool" I'm looking at is an 8' diameter water trough (round). Also not cheap, but heavy duty, so it'll last longer than a kiddie pool. Plus it has a drain, so I can clean it easier.

I have no idea when we'll get to start on the pen, or how long it'll take us. For now I'm just not letting Toby out when the ducks are out without me or Bruce being out there, too. Once we get started on the pen it hadn't ought to take us more than three or four days, it'll be getting going on it that'll determine when it gets done.

Considering the cost of the pen, they may have to make due with the kiddie pool this year, then I can get them the other pool next spring.

However, I looked at other options (mainly a dog kennel) and it'd cost me $250 for a 10x10 dog pen - which isn't very nice looking, and is much smaller than what we can build. Too small, I'm thinking for ducks and geese (I can get some after the pen is built, hopefully).

Meri,

Don't forget to check craigslist and freecycle for building materials and supplies. You might be able to cut your costs some.

If you get one of those collaspable kid pools that are 18" high and they are about 5'-8' feet across, just put a layer of sand down under it then cover that with some thick plastic to help prevent roots and things from coming up underneath it. I've used those for several years as outdoor ponds for raising my fish during the summer months.
