I was doing chores this morning, and I accidently left the quail cage door open when I went up to do the top coop -

Well, I came back and none had left the coop, but three were down on the floor of the coop, out of their cage, picking up stuff the ducks had missed

So, I figured, "what the heck..." and I put them all down on the ground and just shut the coop door for the day - they can explore and hop around a bit, then I'll put them back in their cage tonight when I go to put everyone inside. They're easy enough to catch, as long as it's just an 8x8 coop that I have to chase them in

Ok, I called the other hatchery - they are a mix of barred rock, rir, cornish, red sexlink, black sex link, - she said whatever they had leftover after the day's shipping.

Shipping down to KY is 16.70 so total would be about 49 bucks for 110 chicks shipped.

I am gonna talk to Bruce and see what he thinks - I might just grab 100 of these little buggars to sell and make some quick cash. A dollar a piece would double my money easily.

Oh, and Cackle said I am "positively" on the April 29th ship date. I wanted to pin them down, since it's been set back a couple times now. I don't mind it being set back to then, since I'm busy anyway, but I want to know FOR SURE they are coming on a certain date.
She said from the Dellies they are only getting about 30 eggs per day to set right now, but they will be definately be better by then.

I hope it doesn't rain friday, cause I'm gonna try to do Sano again - didn't make it last week, cause it was so cold and wet.
I really have to get rid of some of them duckies

they are starting to really kick in on the eating now (as if they didn't eat enough before - now they are REALLY bad).

One of their heat lamp bulbs blew out last night, so I'm just gonna leave the heat lamps off them now - it is supposed to be warmer at night coming up anyway. I'll have to put in a night light, though, cause they freak and run in circles and will hurt themselves. I'm thinking of just getting one of those tap lights, to save me having to run the electric all night out there for one night light.

Oh, and our water tank heater went out

thankfully I have a spare, but the stoop!d thing didn't heat at all last night, and I had almost an inch of ice this morning on the tank.

Sorry Darryl! Had to go feed my critters!

I am just about broke again, so I probably won't be able to. I'm waiting for the sale in Liberty! Maybe I can afford to feed these guys till then? I wish I had some small cages, so I could take them to Sano. You get more for them if it's not a big humongous group!

shoot, Sam called, he needs his blue button up shirt (that I TOLD HIM to wear!!) so I have to run into town to take it to him. He's going to see Cirque de Soleil tonight with his class.

Dang kid!! That makes at least 4 trips to and from town I'll be making today!!! Someone owes me some gas money

Yeah, Meri, that doesn't surprise me. Remember when mine got out in the building? Cristian was the one to get them, cause I didn't want to crawl under the bunny cage. They are real tame. Even if they did get outside, you could just walk right up to them and pick them up.

Dad's dog found mine that disappeared the other day. One of my hen's had evidently gotten outside, probably due to the chickens. It has been a good 2 months ago, and this quail looked like it had just died. So She has been hanging around for a while I guess. I wish I would have seperated the two that are out there, to get the male to crow. That would have probably got her to come back. Poor thing

Just be careful letting them on the ground. Quail can get sick from chicken poo. Worms for one, there are others though. That's why most people keep them in raised cages, so they don't have to medicate them. I'll probably have mine where they can get on the ground, the breeders anyway. I won't have to worry about eating them if they're sick. At least not right away!

Speaking of worms, I think that is a big problem here!! We have a few chickens that are skinny, and a bunny. I thought the bunny was cause of her teeth, but she doesn't look like they are too bad. The chickens I didn't notice until they were pretty far gone. But it makes sense, the dogs (dad's) had worms, Buzz especially. All the chickens loved going to Buzz's house and scratching around, drinking his water and stuff. The chickens roost (some of them anyway) above this one rabbit's cage. Her cage is covered, but not completely. So they poo in her feeder sometimes. So now I get to worm the bunny too. I have been worming the chickens, since most of them aren't laying anyway. I keep telling dad that he needs to worm his, but I guess he doesn't want to have to wait 2 weeks to have eggs again. I'll have to go and ask about that, if there's a wormer that is safe to use on layers. Probably not. Still doesn't explain the sneezing and stuff.

Yeah, I figured to not make a habit of it, but the poor things looked so happy to be running and hopping around in the coop

I couldn't stick them back into the cage just yet. The male was crowing away, happy as a lark.

I stopped at Day & Day when I went to town, and asked about the Chick Days. He said they're doing it in three batches this year, first batch will be in March 16th. I got some seeds there, too - pickling cukes, pole beans and some watermelon seeds.

took me longer, cause I also stopped and got a buffalo cheeseburger and a latte smoothie mmmmmmm

I have Wazine (haven't used it yet) but I doubt it is safe for layers, either. I had thought about worming mine, since it gets so wet in the coops, sometimes, but they all look fat, so I don't think they have worms.

The coop the quail are in doesn't have much in the way of chickens in it, just BC, and it's been awhile since I had chickens in there (a month at least) just the ducks and BC. Of course, the other chickens sneak in there if the door is open to see if they have any scratch or feed they left uneaten (the piggies!!) but they dont usually stay long.

Oh, one of those call ducks laid her egg in a nest box yesterday
lau.gif
surprized the heck out of me. She must have been determined to get up there, cause it's a good 18 inches off the ground, and not much room to get a good flying start at it. Had a nice nest all snuggled down into the hay in the box, too. Usually they just lay in the hay on the floor in the corner. Today it was back onto the floor, though.

If Kelly Burton is there at Sano this week, you should get one of those milk crates from him for your ducks to lay in. Ducks will use a nest box, but it has to be on the ground.

And I know what you mean about the quail!! When I first got my 3 that were in the building, I just stuck them in a tractor at first. They were having a blast in there, dusting in the dirt and scratching at the grass!! You could leave them on the ground, you'd just have to make sure you wormed them like 3 x's a year. Then you wouldn't be able to eat them for a while afterwards.

Oh, and what's her name at Day&Day told me that she does order bantam chicks from there. All they have are assortments, so she doesn't know what kind they are. I told Cris he should sell his watch that he won in a game at Sano, so he would have a couple dollars to buy his very own chick with! I don't think I'm gonna be buying any. I have a lot of eggs hatching, and really don't have the room for others right now. I am swapping some eggs with someone on here for some bantam cochin eggs, so that will be more to do! Plus I have those button eggs you gave me, and duck eggs. Cris keeps getting mad when I send the duck eggs to people, but I don't have any place to set them right now!! I told him I have 2 more people that want them, then we can start saving them.

These are my breeders, anyway, so no eating on them. But still, I don't want them to have worms - yikes!

I may have a milk crate here, somewhere, or something I can use - I didn't even think about offering them a crate to lay in
lau.gif
brain fart, I guess.
